Hi all,
It's been a while since anything's been posted to this list, but I'd like
to notify you of a new proposal for the "WebCite" tool becoming a sister
project.
The proposal's at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WebCite, and there's also
related discussion on the English Wikipedia Village
pump<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#a_heads-up…>
and Maggie Dennis' talk
page<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mdennis_(WMF)#WebCite_about_to_die>
.
Essentially they're looking to fundraise $50,000 to keep the service
running (we currently have ~182,000 links to their service on the English
Wikipedia) and modernise it, or it will be shutting down towards the end of
2013.
The user has proposed that WebCite becomes a sister project under the
Foundation's wing to "*finance the necessary modernization of the service*".
Now I'm not entirely sure what our stance is on this, but there's already some
support <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WebCite#People_interested> on the
proposal page in a couple of days, so I left a respond on Maggie's talk
page saying I'd make the Committee aware of the proposal and asked a couple
of questions with regards to whether WebCite is willing to become a sister
project and what they'd do with $50,000.
Feel free to add your comments to the proposal's talk
page<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:WebCite> or
on this mailing list.
