Facebook: On this day in 1957, Russian "spacedog" Laika became the first living creature from Earth to enter orbit. She died on her fourth day in space, and some, including a scientist involved, regretted allowing her to die. In 2008, Russian officials unveiled a monument to her in Moscow.
