Hi! I was solicited as a subject for this research survey, which raised
certain concerns for me which is why I am contacting you (your e-mail
address is the listed contact for MIT's COUHES at
http://web.mit.edu/research/.)
I'm fairly sure this project was never reviewed by COUHES, and if it
were the instrument presumably was not.
The survey was conducted using the Google Docs platform, which violates
subject privacy as well as any presumptions of confidentiality.
The survey does not attempt to gain informed consent. Subjects are never
informed who the group of researchers are, the title of the research
project or grant, the goal or purpose of the research, or any contact
information other than Yunzhi Gao's e-mail address in original
invitation; subjects do not know who the PI may be.
I understand a student project might be expected to be less rigorous,
but I would expect a somewhat higher level of review.

Dear Wiki Loves Monuments organizers,
We are a group of researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We
are interested in the impact of copyright free media on a variety of
different industries. In my current project our team is studying the impact
that Wikipedia Loves Monuments and other similar projects that make free
images of geographic places are having on our society. With a view to
better understanding how such projects work and how exactly they achieve
their objectives. We are interested in interviewing certain key Wikipedians
that make such projects possible.
I am writing this email to see if you would be willing to be interviewed to
guide us in conducting in our research. I am including a link to a Google
form with 6 (short) questions about WLM. Your replies would be invaluable
in helping us understand how free media is transforming one important
sector of our economy – tourism, and helping people discover new monuments
and places of interest.
You can find the interview questions here :
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/embeddedform?formkey=dFUtZ0x2ejVMZHFFWm…
Thank you again for reading this email and looking forward to receiving
your replies.
Yunzhi Gao
Good survey, I especially liked how you reassured people as to what you'd
use their information for and that you only asked them their year of
birth. I hope you don't mind but I've forwarded this to the rest of the
research committee and I hope that we will get more feedback from them.
Q9 needs an "It was fun!" option because previous surveys have found this
to be one of the most common motives of our volunteers. I'd also suggest an
option of "I'm proud of my photos and wanted others to see and use them",
plus Els' suggestion which maybe could be worded as "I wanted to document
the heritage of my area".
May I suggest you add questions to find out whether people have used these
photos in Wikipedia, whether they have used the Quality featured process
and what other topic areas they might be interested in participating in.
You could word these as
Question W Have you added any of the photos you took to Wikipedia?
1 Yes
2 No, the monument I photographed doesn't have an article on Wikipedia
3 No, the Monuments I photographed already have pictures in their Wikipedia
article.
4 No, I'm not sure how to do that.
5 No, not yet but I might in future.
Question X Have you submitted any photographs for consideration as Featured
or Quality images in Wikimedia Commons?
1 Yes
2 No, I don't know about those processes
3 No, My camera isn't good enough to create that quality of photograph
4 No, I don't think any of my photographs are up to those standards
5 No, not yet but I might in future.
Question Y Will you take part in Wikimedia loves Monuments in September
2013?
1 Yes
2 No, not unless there are more monuments designated near me.
3 Not sure.
Question Z If we ran other similar competitons would you be likely to
participate?
1 Wiki loves biology - taking photos of every species of life on earth -
Yes/No/Maybe
2 Wiki loves geography - taking photos of every river, beach, waterfall,
mountain or other natural feature - Yes/No/Maybe
3 "Photos for Wikipedia" a contest to add relevant useful photographs to
illustrate Wikipedia articles that don't currently have images Yes/No/Maybe

Hi Pine,
that's correct, we discontinued the bi-monthly meetings for a number of reasons even though many activities that fall within the scope RCom continued silently over the last months (project/subject recruitment request reviews; monthly publication of the research newsletter; open access and open data policies; expert engagement initiatives). At this stage RCom is an entirely volunteer-driven effort with little to no support from WMF (I am myself helping during my spare time). For RCom to fulfill its mission we need to find a better collaboration model, make it more self-sustainable and open up participation to community members in its various areas of activities. To this aim I posted a reorg proposal [1] that was introduced and discussed last week at a workshop organized by Mayo Fuster at Wikimania. Part of this reorganization includes a new policy proposal drafted by Aaron Halfaker to replace the current review process with a new one with a strong community engagement component [2]. We'd love to hear your thoughts on how to move forward, I expect we will be sharing updates on research-l once we've reviewed these various proposals.
Best,
Dario

We had a discussion about those issues on this list in March, and I got the impression that RCom was planning to take action on that at the next RCom meeting. There was also some activity at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Committee/Areas_of_interest/S…. I’d appreciate RCom bringing some finality and clarification to these procedures as written on Meta before the next US academic year starts, and/or starting some sort of formal working group.

Hey folks,
This experimental study represents a test of a new tool for Wikipedia
editors that would provide them with information and sources in an effort
to support their wiki-work.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research_talk:Using_information_sources_to_d…
At a glance:
- Recruit editors via User_talk page postings
- ~180 registered users spread across three samples (60 editors per
sample)
- One participant will be (randomly) chosen to receive a $50 gift card
Unless substantial concerns are raised by Saturday, June 30th, I plan to
propose that the review be closed. Please have a look before then.
-Aaron
Hello!!!
Good news!
The Rcom panel was finally accepted for Wikimania: Wikipedia & Research: A love–hate relationship
There has been a lot of discussion on this matter in the Wiki-research-l so, it seems we are going to have a lightfull discussion!
I created this page at meta to coordinate the organization of the workshop.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Rcom_workshop_@_Wikimania_2012
Please visit the page and see the tentative plan I created, and please add content, ideas, inputs, etc. during this week, let's discuss about it and by June 15th we could have a plan to update the programe page.
Cheers! Mayo

Hi everybody,
I wanted to give you the heads up that the Wikimedia Foundation is planning to endorse a petition to the White House to mandate open access to taxpayer-funded research. The petition is in line with previous open access declarations that we endorsed and is supported by a large number of organizations including Creative Commons, the Public Library of Science and the Open Knowledge Foundation. The White House will give a formal response if the petition hits 25K signatures within 30 days (by June 19).
We are aiming to publish a blog post tomorrow morning PT and we put together some FAQ explaining how the decision was made and why we want to support this important initiative that is fully aligned with our mission. We'll send an announcement shortly to various other community outlets.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Blog/Drafts/Access2Researchhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Access2Research
If you want to help please head off to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Access2Research
Best,
Dario
(apologies for cross-posting)
A petition you should care about: require free access over the Internet to journal articles arising from taxpayer-funded research.
http://access2research.org/http://wh.gov/6TH
25,000 signatures in 30 days (by June 19) gets an official response from the White House.
