IMO this script should be ported using [[https://pypi.python.org/pypi/mwlib%7Cmwlib]], and then as a separate task (T71980) we investigate replacing mwlib with [[https://pypi.python.org/pypi/mwparserfromhell%7Cmwparserfromhell]].
