Hi Multimedians,
I am trying to lightly edit, convert and upload about 20GB of video from Wikiconference USA. One of the conversion tools suggested to me, https://wikimedia.meltvideo.com/index.php/main, uses a self-signed security certificate that is not trusted by my browser for secure Oauth use. Another tool, the videoconvert tool on Labs, crashes my browser, possibly because it wants to put all of the video batch in RAM, and 20GB is both more RAM than I have and far more than the 3GB limit for 32 bit applications. Any other suggestions about how to convert and upload 20GB of video in a batch?

Not an answer to your question, but my suggestion would be to cut it in shorter pieces before you try to convert and upload it, By doing that you will reduce the file size and as a side benefit most likely increase the usefulness of, and the chance to the discover the videos.

The individual segments have a maximum size of around 1.5GB and are about 25 minutes long at most. I have too many other priorities to be spending lots more volunteer time with these videos, so a batch upload would be most appreciated. Otherwise there may be a long wait before I get around to uploading these one by one.

Hey Pine!
I'm looking at streamlining the import/upload process for videos among other things, and would be more than happy to help with this.
If the files are already cut up into presentation-sized pieces, then I can handle the batch conversion/upload, and the experience will help me with designing tools for the next batch! If they need cutting still, we'll figure it out. :)
If network speeds are a problem for uploading the footage in its current state, we can work out shipping or otherwise transporting a portable drive. (20G isn't super huge in video terms, so it might be easiest to ship it to me in Portland and I'll do the batch-conversion and upload from my end. For very large collections we may have to ship things to the data center directly and that requires more coordination.)

Hi Brion, I suppose that I could try uploading to Google Drive and sharing the files with you, which may or may not encounter the same problem that the Labs tool has. I would prefer to be done with this project ASAP, so if it's OK with you I can send you some kind of physical media and then you can upload as you see fit.
One note: there are a couple of clips that I would rotate or concatenate if I could. My antiquated editing software is 32-bit, so like my browser, it crashes when dealing with large video files. If you could rotate or concatenate as you think best, I would appreciate it.

Ok, the videos I got from Pine are now uploaded on Commons into this category:

For the longer videos I uploaded both the split parts, and a further-recompressed stitched-together version. (The stitched versions were compressed with VP9 so I could reduce the file size under the 1GB chunked-upload limit.)
Note that it may take a bit more before they all properly render low-resolution versions for online viewing, but the originals should still play in Firefox/Chrome while they run.

(20G isn't super huge in video terms, so it might be easiest to ship it to me in Portland and I'll do the batch-conversion and upload from my end. For very large collections we may have to ship things to the data center directly and that requires more coordination.)

Not an answer to your question, but my suggestion would be to cut it in shorter pieces before you try to convert and upload it, By doing that you will reduce the file size and as a side benefit most likely increase the usefulness of, and the chance to the discover the videos.

I imagine you mean the total of all your video is 20 GB, and that the indvidual files are smaller (?)
Please keep in mind that currently commons has a hard limit of 4 GB as the max file size (By hard I mean hard coded into the code. There might be a possibility to stretch that to 5 GB by making some code changes to MW, but beyond that :S ). So all the individual files you upload in the end must be 4 GB or less.

If you're comfortable with the command line (and aren't on metered internet ;), one way to do conversion is to upload the file to your tool labs account, and convert using ffmpeg at tool labs. Obviously this is only a viable approach if you feel fairly comfortable with the cli.
