Can we use this situation as evidence that WMF resources should urgently be directed to improving end-users' video viewing experiences on mobile? (:

Hi, I tried the video on Android 5.1 Lollipop (Samsung Galaxy S6) and it was choppy and unreliable.
At this point in time, you might consider going with VP8 for the highest compatibility. VP9 is still kind of bleeding edge.
Are you sure that you viewed the VP9 version? I would expect the TimedMediaHandler js (if it was working properly, usually a big if) to select the VP8 transcoded version for playback, not the original.
err. nevermind. TMH selects the vp9 as the best possible source on my phone for some reason, so it probably does the same for you too.
The chopiness might not even have anything to do with vp9 so much as the high bit-rate of the original source being too much for a phone or something, although hard to know for sure. The VP8 1080p transcode behaves rather chopily on my phone too.
All I can say for sure is that the webm VP8 480p transcode plays nicely on my kind of oldish phone. The VP8 720p is a bit choppy but not too bad.
