Dear Benoit and Thiemo,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful responses to this question, which are much appreciated :)
We’ll add a summary of your recommendations on this Phabricator ticket:

Hello everyone!
Thank you for this improvement. IMHO, this is enough: power users know how to copy/paste a link or a short wikicode. This file name feature is not for general public use. I hope more newbies will use VisualEditor, and they do not need this feature.
The "File:" prefix is optional: it is automaticaly added by the interface (and translated). If you type wikicode, you know how to add a prefix.
Is it possible to have VisuelEditor's media editing box on vector and monobook? This may convict power user not to ask for this kind of feature.
Best, Benoît

Hi Fabrice,
here is my very quick, personal response to your questions.
They can already copy the file name [...] from the Share or Embed panels
I just tried that and no, I can't copy the file name from these panels because I can not select the file name. The fields are blocked. I would have to copy everything and remove not needed parts later, which I find counter-intuitive and non-practical. Please see https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/177786/ https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/177786/
- Is the placement below the license practical?
It's a good compromise, in my opinion.
- Should we include ‘File:’ before the file name?
In my opinion, no, don't include the namespace. It's not needed in most cases (galleries, templates, VE) and may require different localizations in specific cases. Long-time users may request it just because they are used to it but I think the arguments for *not* adding the namespace should win.

2014-12-05 1:57 GMT+01:00 Fabrice Florin <fflorin@wikimedia.org mailto:fflorin@wikimedia.org>: Hi folks,
We're happy to let you know that our multimedia team has completed all the requested 'must-have' improvements to Media Viewer for this year’s release, based on community feedback.
These improvements have now been released on all Wikimedia-hosted sites, as described here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multimedia/Media_Viewer/Improvements https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Multimedia/Media_Viewer/Improvements
We would appreciate your advice on one last community request, which seems important to address before we wrap up.
Many editors have asked for a quick way to copy and paste the full file name from Media Viewer, so they can use that file in an article without extra clicks.
They can already copy the file name from the URL, or from the Share or Embed panels, but have to remove extra characters, which slows them down. And now that we have replaced the file name with a caption right below the image, there is no easy way to copy it in Media Viewer.
To address this issue, we propose to show the file name right below the license label, as illustrated here:
https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/798 https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/798
Here are a few questions we’d love your feedback on:
- Is this file name feature useful for editors?
(We know it’s not that useful for readers, which is why we propose placing it below the fold — but we wanted to offer it for editors who requested it, if it’s helpful.)
- Is the placement below the license practical?
(Note that you have to scroll down to see the file name; but that seemed faster than placing it in the Share panel, which would be one click away and may be harder to find.)
- Should we include ‘File:’ before the file name?
(Does it help editors if we display ‘File:Chamonix flowers.jpg’ — instead of just ‘Chamonix flowers.jpg’, as shown in the mockup above?)
- Any other suggestions for improvement?
Please let us know what you think, so we can make any final tweaks based on your feedback. You can respond by email to the list or just to the me and the four team members in the Cc: line.
We will post one last project update in a few weeks, to share our research findings.
Best regards,
Fabrice — on behalf of the Multimedia Team
