Hey all,
I facilitate our Technical Collaboration team meeting on Tuesday mornings,
so I can't make those standups.
Today I'll be emailing Ramsey and Pam about closing the Consultation, and
spreading the word externally about our upcoming IRC office hours while I
work on the internal communication.

Greetings,
The Structured Data on Commons team [0] has a new feedback request up on
Wikimedia Commons, concerning potential designs for Multilingual Caption
support in the Upload Wizard [1] Information can be found on the page
linked below, as well as space for feedback and discussion.
Thank you for your time, see you on the wiki.

Microsoft has introduced a codec pack which adds support for Ogg Vorbis and
Theora media to the Edge browser, as well as enabling WebM VP8 and VP9, in
regular <video> elements.
https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2017/12/05/introducing-web-media-extens…
They seem to have done it right -- if you install it, Commons will
automatically pick up the native WebM or ogg playback and use it in place
of the ogv.js JavaScript shim. Neat!
If we're lucky, this'll get rolled into a default option some day; if not,
we can still point to the download fairly easily as an "improve your
playback experience" warning. (Filed
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T182129 to improve this.)

Now that we've got MP3 uploads starting up, the less-controversial MP3
*transcodes* are now on as well. :D
This means that Safari, Edge, and IE users will start playing back audio in
an MP3 version instead of loading the JavaScript decoder shim (ogv.js).
This means faster load times, which will get even better when we finish
retooling the media player controls later on...
It also means that the mobile view, which is incompatible with our current
media controls, will start having working audio on iOS and other
non-Android devices. Rock on!
(Firefox, Chrome, and Android will continue to natively play back Ogg
Vorbis audio files, or the Ogg transcodes of other formats.)
Looks like it will be a few days before the batch jobs finish at their
current rate to fill in the back-catalog; newly-uploaded files will
automatically pick up MP3 transcodes.
The ogv.js decoder shim is still used for video on Safari/IE/Edge, and for
audio in cases where an MP3 transcode isn't present yet.
== How does it work? ==
Similar to video, we produce files in multiple formats:
* the original file
* transcode to Ogg Vorbis
* transcode to MP3
If the original file is already Ogg Vorbis, we don't produce an Ogg Vorbis
transcode -- same if it's MP3 we don't produce a second MP3. All the ones
we do have get listed out in separate <source> elements, in a
server-defined preference order.
For browsers without special player JS, the <audio> element picks up the
first source the browser is compatible with -- so Safari or Edge sees only
MP3, while Chrome or Firefox sees them. Our player JS in desktop mode also
picks up native-Ogg preferably to MP3, but will use MP3 preferably to
software-Ogg (ogv.js shim).
In theory this should all be pretty transparent, and most people shouldn't
notice which version is being played back. But there's likely more work to
be done, from redoing the frontend player code to making it easier to place
audio and video in the editor. :)

Dear all,
the International Federation of Film Archives are planning a symposium
on "Sharing" on April 23-24 as part of their next annual conference
(22-27 April 2018) in Prague.
One of the organizers - Adelheid Heftberger, in CC - reached out to
ask whether I knew anyone who would be able to deliver an talk on
Wikidata there.
If that's you or you know someone who is active around film-related
matters on Wikidata, then please get in touch with her.
Submission deadline for proposals for the symposium is December 8, according to
http://nfa.cz/cz/industry/2018-fiaf/fiaf-2018/ .
Cheers,
Daniel
I had a snafu upgrading the ogv.js audio/video playback which broke
playback in the latest versions of Safari and Edge for a couple days.
Problem was that the new version of ogv.js used the WebAssembly (wasm)
builds of the codecs by default on supporting browsers, but our server
setup wasn't willing to actually serve the files. For the moment I've
disabled wasm and switched it back to the pure-JavaScript version of the
codecs.
(Performance is similar currently, but the wasm builds load and compile
faster in the browser.)
I'd also like to have a bigger discussion about use of things like
WebAssembly in JavaScript libraries we pull in, and what kind of packaging
and maintenance issues this may have. Will talk over on wikitech-l...

Google Code-in is an annual contest for 13-17 year old students. It
will take place from Nov28 to Jan17 and is not only about coding tasks.
While we wait whether Wikimedia will get accepted:
* You have small, self-contained bugs you'd like to see fixed?
* Your documentation needs specific improvements?
* Your user interface has small design issues?
* Your Outreachy/Summer of Code project welcomes small tweaks?
* You'd enjoy helping someone port your template to Lua?
* Your gadget code uses some deprecated API calls?
* You have tasks in mind that welcome some research?
Also note that "Beginner tasks" (e.g. "Set up Vagrant" etc) and
"generic" tasks are very welcome (e.g. "Choose & fix 2 PHP7 issues
from the list in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T120336 ").
Because we will need hundreds of tasks. :)
And we also have more than 400 unassigned open 'easy' tasks listed:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/query/HCyOonSbFn.z/#R
Would you be willing to mentor some of those in your area?
Please take a moment to find / update [Phabricator etc.] tasks in your
project(s) which would take an experienced contributor 2-3 hours. Check
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Code-in/Mentors
and please ask if you have any questions!
For some achievements from last round, see
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/02/03/google-code-in/
Thanks!,

Yo''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''!!!!!!!!!! You people are the
bomb!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe I'm just gettin' onto this. This is so
freakin' cool! I feel like I am immersed in AR/VR/ we are..... I hope I
didn't just blow it. Here! I'll dust it off and put it back.
My name is Jackson Ladyman, and I am a 33 year old Christian that believes
Most Creation story, especially mine, which treats the Bible as a tool used
to corrupt the Love and Benevolence of the Most ' you, me, us 'ay that
problen didn't stay a minute longer than Day 7.
Or perhaps this only day 8th Day as Philosophised in Jehovah Witness
Traditions Passed-Down. I feel like a kook.
None-the-less my favourite item of clothing is a leather belt and somewhat
comically oversized buckle purchased from a Sicilian la costra
'nostra-looking vendor operating from a fashion boutique with New York in
its name on James St. Northbridge, Perth, WA, Australia. i.e. DownUnder.
The buckle is displays a depiction of The Last Supper by Leonardo Da

My Boy right there; like my forbidden idol I Want to die for what I
believe. Forgive me Ja'h Bless and burn the rest. That's that Ol'''
Testament 'ish.
Anywayz, please don't disrespect me, as I am, and I will pay you the same
civil-courtesy. Like I said, 'My Boy'
' with the same Love and Respect I meditate with; I was saddened to find my
entry into this scape was marked 'n' marred with the execution of an Artist
whose aura can be felt from a graphic representation of His image.
If you would allow me the honour I would like to be standing-by the 3D
printer that has just recently been assigned to my University's Library
(incidentally, which is open for another 7ish hours). The technology is
only new to us, and the current 20 or so green, white, and I think it was
orange, pieces are no David displayed in Florence, and hence it won't be a
Joanna Capelle marvel, but it will be a fitting dedication.
Before I progress to as to why I joined "Wiki" may I bring attention to the
fact that there is a "wiki" for Noongar. I don't agree with that
common-spelling and I'm not even actually sure what a "wiki" is, but 'ay.
Love and Respect; in advancing. Thank you.
I am extremely excited. Yesterday in a meeting I had with Nyungar Elder
Noel Nannup seeking his blessing in the form of a Traditional Welcome to
Country for some future-adventures I am going to attempt, Dr. Nannup
threw-me into a surreal state-of-mind when he connected me to Nyungar Elder
Marie Taylor who I had studied Nyungar Cullture and Language under about 12
years ago and who I believed to have passed-on about 8 years ago as told to
me by another misinformed mob.
Anywayz, she entitled me to Perform the Tradition myself, which could mean
I may have been Initiated as an Elder myself. I'm over the moon! I'm gonnna
set it on fyyyyyyyre. However, in reality, this is just my own speculation,
but it is still nice to see cats flip when I tell'em what's happening.
Of course this was never my attention as I strive to achieve my goal of
protecting the interests of another Aunt'e and her lot who are from the
same Clan but a different Mob (Tribe - Yamatji) as I expose her talent and
promote who to a point where she is comfortable. Hopefully she is strong
enough to allow the world glimpses of the Dreamtime that can be seen
oil'paint-on-canvas. She is to Art what Albert Einstein is to Science.
In Cultivating this rapport I developed the following touch-points to
choose from.

Please check them out and let me know what you think. A lot of it will
change as I specify, but my ultimate goal is to impact the market in such a
way as to redistribute, at least a portion, of the wealth back to those
that made it, and as such the business model is emulated and... Social
Media 101, and you're thoughts would be appreciated.
In arriving at this point, I discovered that the definition for 'abo,' a
word tainted by those that don't use it with affection like I, and those
that are like me, use it, it isn't ascribed any endearing connotations like
I hope, but instead horrific and shameful meanings are being dessiminated.
I would like to put a stop to this and I am writing to this body to seek
council and, perhaps, even form a working-relation and straight-up friends.
That is, if you'll let me start after this yarn
Anywayz, I have been carried away and would like to end with this Thanks.
Thank you. OneLove 'n' Much o'it
Let's bag some baddies.

Hi Brion,
Multimedia WMF and Community Liaisons are still hashing out the details of
a thorough launch for MP3. Please don't turn MP3 upload on yet :)
See the Phabricator task below for updates. Long story short: yes we will
enable MP3 but we also need an improved plan for automated copyvio
detection (for reasons beyond just MP3 on Commons) and we are aiming to
help the community develop that.

Thanks,
Ramsey

Subject: [Multimedia] MP3 update
To: Wikimedia Foundation Multimedia Team <multimedia(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
I'm planning to push MP3 audio output support soon, which should get audio
playback working on iOS devices where the ogv.js shim doesn't load yet.
Feel free to ask, answer, or comment at
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Addi
ng_MP3_audio_output_for_iOS_compatibility
Since earlier discussion on MP3 upload was pretty positive and tools folks
like Dispenser say scanning them for copyvios is not a problem, I'd like to
push on enabling the upload soon too.
Both should be simple cases of switching the defaults on from off.
