Media Viewer Update + IRC Chat on Friday

Hi folks, We’re making good progress on Media Viewer (1), and would like to invite you to test the current beta version v0.2, so we can get it ready for wider release in coming months. We’ve developed a number of new features in recent weeks, which are listed at the top of our Media Viewer discussion page (2). We would love it if you could review the ones labeled ‘ready for testing’. You are also welcome to check our specifications for features that are ‘coming soon’. We also invite you to join our Media Viewer Chat on IRC (3), this Friday, February 21, 2014 at 18:00 UTC. This is a good opportunity to discuss these features together, and our development team will be ready to answer your questions over Wikimedia's Office IRC Channel. We’ll send more updates on this product as it develops. Our goal is to release the current version of Media Viewer v.0.2 by the end of this quarter on a few pilot sites — with a wider release next quarter. We are also starting design work on the next version v0.3, which would support more media file formats such as audio and video, to be developed next quarter. RfC: Should we support MP4 Video on our sites?

Greetings! The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks your guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. As you know, this digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC. (1) Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora). However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required. We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not we should support MP4 on our sites. The Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members. What do you think? In the Beta tab, you'll probably have already noticed a big fat Media Viewer tick-box.
