*Reasoning* (From our public statement on 4 January, 2013)
A lot of people may ask why the chapter needs a fundraiser when it has
access to WMF funding. The answer is, we are still ineligible for FDC of
WMF (we hope to be eligible for the second round of funding in 2013) and
would need to rely on grants, spending of which is restricted by the WMF.
Since formation, the chapter has relied heavily on the Executive Committee
to take on the burden of running the show. In an ideal world, the EC would
like to take on the role of guiding the chapter rather than actually be
responsible for operations after two years of incorporation, which should
be best done by professionals rather than volunteers in their spare time.
The chapter has hired an employee (Sowmyan Tirumurti, our Executive
Manager) as well as plans to lease its own office premises in Bangalore. We
will need the help of those volunteers who are in a position to support us.
It could be a small individual donation or in the form of a corporate
donation from an institution. A small token of support from you could go a
long way in helping us achieving our goals of furthering the movement in
India.*

Dear all,
It is great to have this new list.
To introduce myself, I have been a wikipedia contributor for a few years
and recently started dabbling with Mediawiki.
I have been trying to put together a mediawiki based site for a specific
purpose. That's when I discovered that the many things we take for granted
on Wikipedia don't come out of the box in a new media wiki installation and
need to be added.
For example:
- Templates (especially infobox, which we are so used to on WP, havent
figured how to add these)
- Having to install Extension cite (for references) and not being out of
the box was a surprise.
- Addition to addon like Wikilove and WikiEditor.
- Extensions I had not heard of like Parser, Validator seem essential
- Extensions to manage spam need to be installed additionally
Also I had a few other struggles:
There are so many extensions but still difficult to choose. Wish they were
organised better.
Also Many don't have links to examples where they are deployed, that would
a be very helpful.
Help doesn't get installed for a new mediawiki and needs to be copied for
from mediawiki.org
Also the user manual has so much detail, that it would scare off a new
user. I have grouped the help into 4 sets - reader, editor, experienced,
advanced editor and admin on my instance to make it easy for new users.
Thought of sharing my experience and seeks any inputs or advise from the
more experience folks on the list (Apologies if I am wrong in any of the
above).
I found SMW very exciting in terms of capability and impact it could
create. I would be keen to connect with folks who are familiar with SMW.
Some suggestions for projects that could be considered:
Base template kit to import for new wikis
Create more add on bundles like the Semantic Bundle.
Great to be on this list.

Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong are being accept.
The application window is one month (through 22 February).
Wikimania 2013 scholarship is an award given to an individual to enable
them to attend Wikimania in Hong Kong from 7-11 August, 2013.
Both types of scholarships will be available this year. Partial
scholarships will cover travel expenses to Wikimania, capped at 50% of the
estimated air fare from your nearest international airport according to
[[wm2013:Getting to Hong Kong]]. Full scholarships will cover round-trip
travel, dorms accommodations as arranged by the Wikimania Team, and
registration for Wikimania 2013.
Applicants will be rated on the following four dimensions:
1. Activity within Wikimedia (on-wiki and off-wiki) - 50%
2. Activity outside of Wikimedia and other free knowledge/software projects
- 15%
3. Interest in Wikimania and the Wikimedia movement - 25%
4. Fluency of English language - 10%

Hi all,
This is a post which I mailed to the India community during the release of
the Indic typing tool. I feel it is also relevant for this list. So,
sending it again ;-)
Recently YuviPanda visited us during his vacation along with John and Rob
from WMF. Yuvi spent a week with us and I got a chance to explain how
problematic it is for a mobile user to type in Indic languages though most
smartphones have sound font support and rendering. I explained him what an
end user would like to have (A simple interface and easy navigation,
options to switch typing schemes/languages (Indic ↔ English) and readable
Indic font size). Based on the jQuery.ime for Indic languages Yuvi created
a prototype (http://goo.gl/jH3TO).

Right now it works online for most smartphones having Indic and rendering
support. Someone can use it online from the same link above. The offline
version works fro iPhone and Yuvi is working on fixing bugs for Android.
The offline app will soon be available for Android. Once it works perfectly
with Android it will be made available for free in Android market. We are
still to test this for Symbian, Blackberry and Windows, 3 other market

I am still in the pipeline to persuade to add a feature for searching on
Indic wikipedias from this app. Please join me clapping for Yuvi for this

This is the first geographical MediaWiki list (rationale[1]) - and hence
we're still experimenting with the scope. If topics being discussed on
mediawiki-india would benefit from wider exposure, I'm sure they'll 'bubble
up' to wikitech-l or mediawiki-l. I also think that a lot of talk about
events that happen locally. It would also serve as a central mailing list
for the new city-wide MediaWiki groups that form in India.
But honestly, I've no idea how this is going to be used :) So [[WP:BOLD]]
