The Discovery Search Team wants to enable search results on Wikipedia that will include articles gathered across all sister wiki projects – within the same language – but we need your feedback.
Please read t he specifics of how this new functionality https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Cross-wiki_Search_Result_Improvements [1] might work and add
comments, concerns, or alternative ideas for design options https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Cross-wiki_Search_Result_Improvements/Design [2] on the talk pages .
See an image https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/File:Search_results_page-enwiki_right-hand-box-general-projects.png [3] that shows one of many example display options that have been mocked up, after considering what other wiki communities have done.
Thank you for your time and c heers from the Search Team!

Will wikis have the option to keep the current more comprehesive style, which includes direct links to the target pages?
Nemo
Hi Nemo,
Yes, we plan on having a type of switch in order for individual wikipedias to not show (and not fetch) the search results from other wikis of the same language, if that is what is preferred.
Cheers,
Deb

I'm not sure whether Deb answered Nemo's question. I think Nemo may have meant using the style like that on the Italian Wikipedia results https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Speciale:Ricerca&profile=default&fulltext=Search&search=milk. Interestingly, that particular layout doesn't seem to be included on the cross-wiki design page, though it is similar to some of the tabbed designs. I think it should be included, so I'll try to add it.
What Deb was responding to was whether we'll have an on/off switch for the cross-wiki results, which we will. Whether there will be multiple interfaces available for cross-wiki results is not something I know the answer to.
Now Nemo and Deb can both tell me *I* misunderstood *them.* ;-)

D'oh. It is there, I just didn't recognize the thumbnail.

Well, we're still in the early stages here as you can see from the timeline, so it is possible that the first release of the product could include this. We could generate a few mockups which include direct links to the target pages. Would you be interested in looking at those, if we did? :-)
Thanks, Dan
Hi all,
I've moved this conversation to the talk page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Tb52y5p9sjgcvirc [1].
We do have one sample treatment, modified from fr.wiki https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/File:Search_results_page-frwiki_box-with-articles-in-projects.png, that shows links to direct articles in the sister projects in the search results.
Cheers,
Deb
