Hello all,
I wanted to let this group know that as of last week, I have taken over as Head of Discovery at the WMF. Tomasz Finc, who previously held the position, left the Foundation to continue his career in Open Source software leadership elsewhere. He will most definitely be missed.
I have been with the WMF since mid-2011 as an engineer, and most recently have been leading the fundraising tech team.
I am very excited for this opportunity to work with the Discovery team, and can't wait to get better acquainted with this community.
Looking forward to working with you! -Katie
Thanks, Katie!
Will you continue to manage Fundraising Tech, or will that group be getting new management?

Hi Pine,
The current plan is that I will function as the head of both Discovery and Fundraising Tech, and that those teams will continue to exist as separate verticals.

Understood. Is there a plan to hire a new manager for one of them, or is the plan to keep this arrangement long-term?

We do have a plan to hire an engineering manager for the Discovery team, but they would start out reporting to me. Aside from that, the plan is to see if the arrangement is sustainable long-term or not, and look at our options if the answer ends up being "no".
It may be worthwhile to note that both the Editing and Reading verticals each have a larger headcount than Discovery and Fundraising Tech put together, so this isn't necessarily that strange from a management standpoint.

Understood. Thank you. I hope that you'll like Discovery. It'll probably involve more community interaction than Fundraising Tech. I'm personally excited about some of the possibilities in Discovery, such as improving media searches on Commons!
