As a result, I'm wondering if we should stop referring to https://wikipedia.org as "the portal"?

My personal feeling is that "the search portal" is sufficiently disambiguated. You might also refer to it as "WISP" (abbreviation of "Wikimedia Search Portal").
You could run an RfC if you'd like to get community input about the name.
