Caile Ferate Romane is the official designation of the state railway carrier of Romania. CFR manages the fourth-largest railway network in Europe, in terms of volume of passengers and freight. The network is significantly interconnected with other European railway networks, providing pan-European passenger and freight services. CFR, which as an entity has been operating since 1880, is divided into four autonomous companies: CFR Calatori, which is responsible for passenger services; CFR Marfa, responsible for freight transport; CFR Infrastructura, which manages the infrastructure on the Romanian railway network; Societatea Feroviara de Turism, or SFT, which manages scenic and tourist railways. CFR is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, and has regional divisions in Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iasi and Brasov.
