A big warm hello to my fellow African Wiki Community Members!
It's been almost a year since some of us met up at Wiki Indaba 2014. We all
left with a sense of purpose on how to expand Wikimedia in our community,
and had great ideas on how to increase the number of editors on Wikipedia.
Some personal pledges were made, and there have been several initiatives
from African countries over the last couple of months.
We are excited about the future of the Wikimedia movement in Africa, and
will be working hard in the coming months to expand on the foundations laid
at Wiki Indaba. We will of course need your input and feedback and will be
reaching out to you soon.
For those attending the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin this year, please
feel free to join us at the African meetup
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2015/Social_events#Them
atic.2Fregional.2Flanguage-specific_meetups> where we will touch on what
has transpired this year, and discuss initiatives for going forward. We
will share notes of this meeting via meta for those who cannot attend.
There have been several discussions lately regarding the frequency of Wiki
Indaba gatherings. Considering that the African community is relatively
small, the suggestion at the 2014 conference was that such a gathering would
take place every 3 years, with Tunisia being selected as the next host.
Wikimedia ZA has not applied for funding to host an Indaba within the
upcoming financial year, but we will be happy to assist in applying for
funding from the Wikimedia Foundation to host future events.
We will reach out again at the beginning of June to map the way forward.

Dear Intrepid Wikipedians …
Hello. For me, 2015 seems to be dominated by Libraries … I have been part of the mLiteracy Think Tank recently, and then there was GLAM WIKI where Libraries featured prominently.
The importance of Libraries to us - as community activators across Africa - has been niggling away at me. And, the outcome of the niggling is that we should all seriously think about partnering our usergroups / chapters / fledgling communities with a local library or library service.
Hear me out.
Why?
1. Many - especially the flagship ones - have a digitisation programme of some sort.
2. They are the guardians of the very citable knowledge that we want to see about Africa and our countries on Wikipedia
3. They are busy, but are mandated to share that knowledge
4. They attract natural wikipedias - people who are hungry for knowledge - in large numbers
5. They are often looking for programmes to run with after school activities, and might have ICT support.
They should be included in our outreach strategies, and not just in our GLAM dreams.
How do we find out about them … ?
Mylee Josephs - who was at GLAM WIKI in the Netherlands in April sent me this information.

I would agree. Libraries have a foothold in communities that other cultural
institutions do not. They are seen as communities hubs and in Africa do not
carry the weighty colonial (and in the case of South Africa, apartheid)
legacy of collections that archives and museums do.

Dear All
I hope you are all well?
We are starting to think about the theme for the Wiki Loves Africa 2015. There are many ideas from the organising teams, but not one clear winner.
So we have put together this page for the community to propose an option and to consider and discuss what has already been proposed. There are already a few ideas on there. We want to get some more. Please feel free to either propose a theme you are passionate about AND/OR add you thoughts about the practicalities, challenges and suitability of each theme that has already been proposed.
The ability to propose a new option and discuss the existing ones will close on the 31st May. Voting for each theme will open on the 1st June until the 30th June.
* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa/2015_theme_ide… <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa/2015_theme_ide…>
Please send this out to your local communities. We will also post the page and each idea onto Facebook.
Warmest
Isla (user:Islahaddow) and Florence (user:anthere)

Please note that we will be working on a few open tasks for mailing list
server maintenance, next Tuesday, May 19th from 17:00 to 19:00 UTC.
During this time, all mailing list traffic, as well as online archives, may
become unavailable. Once the window has ended, all mail routing should
resume normally, and any messages sent during the window will then be
delivered accordingly.
All associated tasks and changes are linked from
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T99098.
This mail has (initially) been send to all list administrators, and
wikitech-l. Please feel free to forward to any other lists or parties that
would need to know about this maintenance window.

Bonjour,
Philippe Blatti
