New DB_REPLICA constant; DB_SLAVE deprecated

As of 950cf6016c, the mediawiki/core repo was updated to use DB_REPLICA instead of DB_SLAVE, with the old constant left as an alias. This is part of a string of commits that cleaned up the mixed use of "replica" and "slave" by sticking to the former. Extensions have not been mass converted. Please use the new constant in any new code. The word "replica" is a bit more indicative of a broader range of DB setups*, is used by a range of large companies**, and is more neutral in connotations. Even multi-master RDBMs systems tend to have a stronger consistency than classic RDBMs slave servers, and present themselves as one logical "master" or "authoritative" copy. Life hack: Working with production content in your local wiki

Roadmap for CX?

Following the recent outage, we've had a new series of complaints about the lack of improvements in CX, especially related to server-side activities like saving/publishing pages. Now, I know the team is involved in a long-term effort to merge the editor with the VE, but is there an end in sight for that effort? Can I tell people who ask "look, 6 more months then we'll have a much better translation tool"? Is there a publicly available roadmap for this project and more generally, for CX? Thanks, Strainu

Introducing Quibble, a test runner for MediaWiki

Hello, Running all tests for MediaWiki and matching what CI/Jenkins is running has been a constant challenge for everyone, myself included. Today I am introducing Quibble, a python script that clone MediaWiki, set it up and run test commands. It is a follow up to the Vienna Hackathon in 2017. We had a lot of discussion to make the CI jobs reproducible on a local machine and to unify the logic at a single place. Today, I have added a few jobs to mediawiki/core. An immediate advantage is that they run in Docker containers and will start running as soon as an execution slot is available. That will be faster than the old jobs (suffixed with -jessie) that had to wait for a virtual machine to be made available. A second advantage, is one can exactly reproduce the build on a local computer and even hack code for a fix up. *"To be, or not to be"* A phrase from Shakespeare's *Hamlet <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamlet> *is "To be, or not to be, that is the question"*.* Chris Koerner from WMF Discovery published some interesting information about the verb "to be", and how on-wiki search deals with it, in this issue <https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/discovery/2018-April/001652.html> of the *Discovery Weekly Update*: "The English verb "to be" is kind of weird—the infinitive "be" and participles "being, been" start with "b-", while the preterite forms "was, were" start with "w-", and the present forms "am, is, are" start with vowels. The conjugations originally come from three or four different verbs! Why "three or four"? Wiktionary disagrees with itself a bit, listing four on the etymology of "is" [5] and three on the etymology of "be". [6] The conflation goes back at least to Proto-Germanic, [7] so German is similarly weird. [8] Dutch has a greatly simplified paradigm, but still shows some trace of the multiple sources. [9] Other languages, including ASL, Arabic, Bengali, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian at least partly avoid this mess by having a zero copula.
