It seems like a better UI to do effectively the same function would be
very helpful. Think of how gmail (for example) by default compresses
read messages in a thread, so you can just see the new messages. The
topic index displayed by gmail also boldfaces new contributors and
displays the first "new" content in the thread in the message preview.
