You probably need to set $wgCapitalLinks = false; . Wiktionary uses
this setting to be able to have page names with an uncapitalized first
letter. On your wiki, this is probably set to true (the default),
causing MediaWiki to miss the "dog" entry because it'll be looking for
"Dog".
