3. We change our wiki syntax, however slightly.
Besides everyone using
MediaWiki having to learn a new (altered) syntax, we'll have to change
*every* page in our databases, including *all* old revisions.
There'd be no need to alter old revisions. If there's a relevant change,
have a converter save a new converted copy of the _current_ version, and
allow old revisions to look slightly "off".
This is for instance how upgrading from UseMod was handled; new
converted revisions were saved with a few bits shuffled around, and
older revisions may have a few little quirks if you load them up.
It's not likely that we'd be making major changes to the basic syntax;
minor issues of interpretation, bug fixes, and changes to features have
from time to time slightly changed how a given bit of wikitext will
actually be rendered. That's life; the pages get cleaned up, and life
goes on.
