that we're using it. There are lots of codec names which can also be used
for branding, such as Theora and Vorbis, but Ogg is the umbrella brand.
Well proposing a nonstandard extension (like OGV, or worse one which
is 'standard' for propritary video) certantly won't help with user
confusion or branding...
How about filename.video.ogg as a compromise?
I wasn't really intending to propose a nonstandard extension, I only
proposed it because it was recommended in the theora mailing list post I
read. I just want to use the extension which will be most widely understood.
VLC player, for instance, registers the .ogm file extension by default, but
not .ogv. A web search for "ogm extension" shows no apparent support for
Ivo's assertion that .ogm is only used for MPEG, there are lots of hits
discussing Theora codecs. It's unclear to me how many of these are
discussing standard ogg files and how many are referring to the format
described here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OGM
I suspect they are routinely confused, the players will obviously be happy
either way. If we can find enough evidence that .ogm is routinely used for
Ogg/Theora, then that would be my choice.
