I don't think the problem with ang.wiki is that there aren't fonts
already to support required character but rather this particular user
wants to use a particular family of font that imitates older English
manuscripts. That's his personal preference, as most decent Unicode
fonts work fine for Old English as far as I'm aware.
Of course, there is a wider issue that you mention, and that is poor
support for certain characters in some languages, particularly African
languages and some indigenous languages of the Americas, and that is a
problem that should be solved.
Currently, there is, as far as I am aware, still no solution to the
fact that, for example, some languages use a regular colon as a
letter, but the software renders this in links as an interwiki link
(for example, a link to [[cu:wĭ]] at links to
http://cu.wikipedia.org/). Some people suggested using the triangular
colon, but this isn't correct. Eventually, the answer was given to me
that this could not be considered a bug because none of the languages
that require this are "major", and thus there is no need for a
solution...

Hoi,
No, there are several languages that are severely deficiently supported on
the Internet.. Several African language are also struggling. The guy asking
for better support is an editor not a reader. Readers will not be properly
supported and for this changes to the monobook.css do not cut it.
The only reasonable approach is ensuring that there are fonts that provide
the support. This is however not a given at all. We have to come up with a
holistic solution because we expect people from ALL our projects to use
Commons.
Thanks,

I'm pretty new to the list, but an old
Wikipedia administrator on ang,
but
how does one add a font on the wiki that a user
can set in his user
preferences? I'd like to add the Beowulf font on the ang. Wiki, as it's
a
mediaeval style font. We've had one user
raise quite a ruckus about
using
mediaeval letters, and this looks to be the best
way to accommodate him.
Thinking about it, if it's just for him, you could set up *his*
monobook.css to use the font, and would it then pick it up from his
local machine? Hmm.
