painted on. Some of the graduate students at Media Lab, Jadavpur University
had done Video documentation called 'Project Wall'. Probably we could

I am getting a bit sick of the hypocrisy here. It's the people that are
employed, people in the position of power complaining to people who have
nothing to gain. It's like any other politician, government babu,
complaining about the aam aadmi being angry after an year of scams and
questionable conduct. Do the people complaining have anything ventured? Do
they stand to lose or gain anything? Yet, they should be the one to shut up
and let the establishment get on with whatever it is, it has been doing for
the years before.
Bishakha it's always enjoyable to have you appear on this list to protect
the same interests again. I would barely see your comments on these lists
if not for that. it was the office bearers last years when you argued to
hold them to a lower standard on Wikipedia, the wikipedia community
disagreed. My own feelings wouldn't be as strong here if I didn't know the
actual spending, or the level of some people's involvement in the failed
India initiatives or CIS and others having had other associations. But it's
not like you are an elected representative of this community who should
care about these things.
Either way, I don't think you know what a "level playing field" is in the
first place. It is the right to treat others as equals, and question as
equals. They have the same right to answer back or not. What you are asking
for here is actually the opposite - an uneven playing field. We should all
shut up, stop asking questions, welcome the newcomers with open arms, and
forget that there was any conflict. So, they can indeed be above criticism.

That is an excellent, lengthy, professional, PR-friendly response. I
congratulate and thank you on it. I appreciate the effort you took to
explain and I wish that you might have disclosed the conflicts and the
history before the hiring.
Allow me to offer this critique that some of the facts were a bit
needlessly obfuscated. Most of the assumptions were right, but you
clarified them now, which I think is still helpful. Jadine is indeed an
intern, who was the primary contact between the list and CIS, though she
might have been overseen, it was still true. The conflict was indeed
present. But I'll go ahead and direct questions to you directly that
appeared in my mind after a quick read-
1) I can't seem to understand the rationale behind hiring academicians here
at all. Your organization chose researchers and academicians but the job
requirement was and is, for a management person to oversee and direct a
team. I don't think either of the candidates present that kind of
expertise. Their field of reference is narrow to begin with, limited to the
discipline of their speciality, add to that how little exposure they have
to Wikipedia or similar online culture - this doesn't sound like remotely a
good fit. - this fact was actually the first point that made me think other
interests were put ahead of the Job requirements. This seems like a step or
two further back than ahead, and brings me back to assume that older
contacts/relationships might have been put ahead of qualifications, and it
seems very apparent when you see the mismatch.
2) The hiring process wasn't nearly as neutral as you are suggesting. From
what I know CIS didn't have 1 in 5 vote, it first picked who got selected
for the first round to even have a vote, and I am told that qualified
candidates were eliminated outright by Jadine in the first week before they
were put up for any vote.
3) I am still curious about some of the relationships here. As far as I
know achal still serves on your board? because I have a distinct memory of
there being some association here. He also still serves on the Advisory
board of WMF and had a lot to do with selecting Bishakha. He was also a
fellow for WMF, some time after the start of the India programs.

Wow! This is nice..
Working in team for single spot will add new dimension. For Wikipedia Takes
Pune, we had group of 4 people for one location - After introductory
session, we provided them Google Map and Wikipedia Article copy of same -
So along with photograph they also learn about aspects of that place.
Example - Group going to ShaniwarWada Was briefed in advance about
importance and unknown facts about that place - so photographer is clear
about 'what' to capture. We requested to form group with stranges, so it
was 'fun' part - everyone got to spend whole day with strangers who shared
same photography passion...
Result of this exercise - Within 5 hours, 5,000+ photos were uploaded on
Commons.At end of day we had 6,500+ photos.
This is great team building exercise, we received many amazing volunteers
for club events. And majority work of Summit was executed by people who
were participant at Takes Pune event, later on they became key persons in
Club management.

Hi All,
I would like to share a news with you. Recently Narmadanagar Community
Science Centre, Bharuch, Gujarat organised a science fair for the schools
of Bharuch District. Three of our active Gujarati Wiki community members
participated in the science fair and demonstrate to the teachers and school
children how Gujarati Wikipedia and Wikisource could be utilised by them.
These three users are Satishchandra, Devendrasinh Gohil and Jayam Patel.
Satishchandra is one of the wikimedians recognised for his noteworthy
contributions last year by WMIN.
They participated in the science fair without any external help, and
without any publicity. They talked to shool teachers and students about
what is Wikipedia and wikisource, how can they contribute, how to type in
Gujarati, how wikipedia and wikisource could be useful to them, etc. Also,
they brifed them lightly about the principles of wikis and showed them few
pages as well to provide hands-on experience.

Thank you for sharing this. Excellent work Satishchandra, Devendrasinh
Gohil and Jayam Patel. Mainly because the way in which you have dovetailed
the Gujarati Wiki outreach event at the primary education level. I feel
this is a useful and more organic model of doing Education programmes. I
think there is a larger shared interest among the Gujarati Wikipedian
friends about Wiki-Education programme, as I heard Sushant Salva also
extensively talking about this.
Dhaval, would you and other Gujarati Wikipedian friends want to consider
developing a model of doing Wiki-Education programme. By this I mean going
deeper and critically reflecting, documenting on the challenges and
learnings, etc. If yes, we can bring in some critical inputs by experts in
the Elementary education sector and facilitate the process. And also in
making all your efforts result in larger and sustained results. Please do
discuss with friends and get back either on or off the list - Warmly, Vishnu
If I may, it is important that there is more cross reporting of the work
being done by various Wikipedians across Indian languages. There is not
much news about the passionate work being done by many of our friends.
While we will work in bringing back Wiki Patrika, I feel it is very useful
to have posts on this list which can act as a source of cross-pollination
of ideas, collaborations and projects. Any ideas and suggestions on this
would be Welcome.

In my case, the process began with Achal giving my name to the Nominations

-A phone interview with a headhunter or recruitment firm
-In-person interviews at the WMF office in San Francisco with three board
members (Michael Snow, then board chair; Kat Walsh; Stu West) and the
executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Sue Gardner
-Skype interview with board member Jimmy Wales
I was then invited to be on the WMF board in March 2010. I remember this
process well, since even though I serve on other non-profit boards, I had
never gone through such an extensive and rigorous selection process before
this.
The board positions are unpaid; all of us serve in a volunteer capacity.
Best and hope this throws some light on the WMF trustee selection process.
Just so people know, there is currently a vacancy on the board and another
search process is underway.
