Subject: Wikimedia Clinic #008 digest; #009 on Friday featuring Abstract
Wikipedia!
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
I have posted the digest for Wikimedia Clinic #008. [1]
The topics discussed were:
* WMF Research (Presentation by Leila Zia (WMF))
* Wiki Studies
* Pitching ideas for development to WMF
* Harassment
I encourage those of you interested in any of the above topics to read the
digest. [1]
On Friday, August 21st, at 19:00 UTC[2], we will be hosting Wikimedia
Clinic #009.[3] The scheduled segment this time would be an introduction
to Abstract Wikipedia, featuring project founder Denny Vrandečić himself!
As always, beyond this scheduled segment, there will be time to bring up
any Wikimedia-related questions or topics other call attendees are
interested in.
PLEASE NOTE: experimentally, this call will take place using the free
software Jitsi-based Wikimedia Meet. Desktop/laptop computers can connect
directly via the link[3] but if you want to connect using a mobile device
(phone or tablet) you will need to download the Jitsi app[4] first and use
that to connect via the link[3].
Cheers,
A.

Dearest Indian Wikimedians,
We are extremely happy to announce that West Bengal Wikimedians User Group
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/West_Bengal_Wikimedians> is going to
organize the prestigious Wiki Loves Monuments
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020>
photo-competition at the national level
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_Ind…>
this September again for the third consecutive year. India is going to
participate in the event for the 7th time. Like before, User:Sumitsurai
will be leading our organizing team.
Special thanks to the utmost dedication of our incredible volunteers from
the team as well as from the community at large, for the last 3 years, we
have been steadily increasing the monument data on Wikidata using it as a
central database and almost the entire list
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_Ind…>
is now automatically fetched from there.
Earlier, we have also planned to move beyond ASI and state protected
monuments, and this year we are including Gandhi Heritage Sites, Heritage
Inventory of Indian Railways and Heritages of Portuguese Influence located
in different states and UTs of India. We are also including local
designated sites like the Heritage sites declared by West Bengal Heritage
Commission and Kolkata Municipal Corporation graded buildings. We are
expecting to completely add these data before the competition starts.
We are also aware that the designated monuments by different agencies are
just the tip of the iceberg. We have innumerable monuments from every part
of the country, which are very little or not documented at all, many are
ignored or on the verge of collapse or destruction due to various reasons.
However, we have very limited capacity in our team, but our audacious
ambition is to include as many of them as possible, if not all. For the
last 3 years, the user group has been running cost-effective dedicated
programs to digitally document these monuments, at least in West Bengal and
we have plans to include them in WLM sooner or later.
This year, we have also increased the prize money by around 20% from last
year and included some in-kind prizes too. From the feedback we received
from the participants, we have decided to send certificates to the winners.
Our team has requested
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Requests#Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_…>
CIS-A2K to support the event financially and help us send those prizes to
the winners.
We are currently finishing last month preparations, cleaning and adding
more and more monument data, talking with potential jury members, creating
promotional banners etc.
Expecting your best wishes and active participation from September 1.
Regards,
Bodhisattwa
Volunteer organizer,
On behalf of the entire WLM India team
Hello everyone,
Hope everyone is safe and sound in the light of the ongoing Pandemic. I
would like to share an update regarding the progress of the Movement
Strategy and the design of the transition events.
The Transition Design Group [1] has been meeting over the past month to
discuss the design of the virtual events that will aim to facilitate
the inclusive
Transition process for the movement to start implementing the Movement
Strategy recommendations [2]. The Design Group discussions have been largely
centred around people and their ease of participation, processes for the
Transition events, and the legitimacy of the process, needed resources, and
communications [3]. Transition will be a turning point for our movement to
create a 18-month collaborative implementation work plan that will empower
our community and affiliates.
The virtual Transition events are being planned from the month of September
to December, 2020. We invite your feedback on the draft outline for the
transition events to ensure the events can be as inclusive, participative,
and engaging as possible [4]. The draft outline offers both light and
detailed information regarding the events. The Transition events aim to be
easy to join only once or for multiple events. They are for everyone,
whether a newcomer or a seasoned strategy enthusiast. They are being
designed for diverse participation across time zones and regions in order
to create a movement-wide implementation plan. The review period for the
draft outline is till August 20. After receiving your feedback, the Design
Group will finalize the plan and the Wikimedia Foundation will ensure the
delivery of the events according to the design.
Please comment on the Meta talk page [4] and feel free to use the questions
below as an orientation:
1. How can the plan be improved? In your opinion, what are some barriers
to entry that must be lowered so everyone can take part in Transition?
2. How can we make sure that you and your community have what you need
to participate in the Transition events?
3. If you have attended other virtual events, what has your experience
been like and what lessons can be applied in this case?
You are also encouraged to share your individual feedback directly via
email strategy2030(a)wikimedia.org for any suggestions or ideas.
On behalf of the Design Team,
Rupika
