Dear all,
My apologies if you have already received this email on other channels, but
I think it is a good opportunity for the Indic community to share their
perspective. If you have some availability until January 2021, please join
in the conversations.
Best!

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Call for insights on ways to better communicate the
work of the movement
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
The Movement Strategy recommendations published this year made clear the
importance of establishing stronger communications within our movement.
To this end, the Foundation wants to gather insights from communities on
ways we all might more consistently communicate about our collective work,
and better highlight community contributions from across the movement. Over
the coming months, we will be running focus groups and online discussions
to collect these insights. Individual focus groups will include 10-15
volunteers who will be asked to share insights on specific questions as
part of a facilitated discussion.
How can we best communicate with your community on an ongoing basis? In
what ways does the Foundation currently support your work? We ask you to
share your thoughts on these and other questions by signing up for a focus
group by the end of Wednesday, 2 December, or participating in the
discussion on Meta-Wiki [1].
We would like to collect feedback from across the movement, representing a
wide range of insights and opinions. We will be working to build as many
focus groups as possible, but want to be upfront that we may face
limitations on the number of groups we can convene based on the level of
interest. However, if you would like to discuss your thoughts in detail, we
are also offering the chance to connect with the Communications team in
other ways, including individual and group meetings and office hours [2].
Initial discussions are happening between now and January 2021. We invite
you to join the conversation, and look forward to working together to
explore some important questions.

Hello all,
Thanks for all contributors for the event wikisource proofreadthon 2020.
Happy to see the great contributions .
Happy to see the stats here
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic_Wikisource_Proofreadthon_2020/Progress
On exploring the progress Found a hindi book, seeing good amount of bytes
added as single edits.
I assume that the contents are pasted from somewhere and marked as
proofread with yellow button.
https://hi.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%A4%AA%E0%A5%83%E0%A4%B7%E0%…
We can see such high amount of such bytes contributions for a user here
https://hi.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%B6%E0%…
on the date nov 15 2020
I hope the proofread contributions wont add 1000s of bytes in a single go
usually.
Is this kind of new addition of page content is considered for the
proofreadathon 2020?
Do we have a process to detect and avoid such bulk bytes additions on the
calculation of the points?
Please clarify on this.
It will help a lot to define guidelines for the future events.

Hello Indic Wikisource proofreaders,
We are very happy to announce that the Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon II
2020 [1] is starting from tomorrow and will continue up to 15 November.

to stay inside your home to avoid exposure to the deadly virus.
We are also expecting higher participation than previous contest We
heartily welcome new Wikimedians from different parts of the country to
work on restoring our literary heritage to digital era. Just like previous
contest held on May 2020, we again promising to wrap up everything within
the expected timeline after the competition ends and we are going to keep
our promise again. :-)

Namaste,
I have created 476 files of animated GIFs of Kannada gunithaksharas. These
are extensions of the animations found in this page -
https://kn.wikipedia.org/s/ap. How do I do this other than manually
uploading them?
Thanks and regards,

Hello all,
Please help pick a name for the new Wikimedia wiki project.
This project will be a wiki where the community can work together on a
library of functions.[1] The community can create new functions, read
about them, discuss them, and share them. Some of these functions will
be used to help create language-independent Wikipedia articles that
can be displayed in any language, as part of the Abstract Wikipedia
project. But functions will also be usable in many other situations.
There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of
candidates, with broad voting beginning on 29 September and 27
October. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on 8
December. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and
vote now at meta-wiki:

Thank you.

Hi everyone,
We had the pleasure of connecting on Friday Oct. 30. To continue the
conversation, the Movement Strategy Support Team would like to invite to Global
Conversations
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>
on Saturday November 21, 11:00 to 15:00 UTC, and Sunday November 22, 17:00
to 21:00 UTC [1]. Both events are the same, offered at different times to
have participation from different regions and communities.
The focus of the meetings on Nov. 21 and 22 will be to look at priorities
identified by communities and affiliates
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Transit…>,
and to begin to create a movement-wide implementation plan for 2021. Most
of the work during the calls will be in small group discussions. We will
also set aside time for socializing and (re)connecting with other
Wikimedians.
Registration
-
Please register
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSclZkiCaqBDZ-BPEDw0CWOU_mv95MDUa2l…>
so we can share the login information with you before the call. Registration
remains open until Nov. 20.

The meeting will take place on Zoom. Zoom was chosen as a platform that
many Wikimedians are already familiar with and one that allows live
interpretation and breakout rooms.
As we get closer to the events, we will share the detailed program and
other useful information with you. In the meantime, if you have any
questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via Telegram

Hello everyone,
A journalist from Wired <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_(magazine)>[1],
Omer Benjakob reached out, as he is working on a story related to Wikipedia
in India. He is interested in talking to a few editors working on Wikipedia
specifically. The story is mostly related to on-Wiki content focused around
disinformation and how political tensions pan out on Wikipedia, in the
context of India. If anyone is interested, please email him directly
at omerbj[at]gmail.com or send a direct message at
https://www.facebook.com/omerbj/, before Saturday.
Thank you,
KC.
Hi everyone,
There is now an additional way to browse Wikipedia in India! We are happy
to confirm that the Wikipedia app is available on the top 3 mobile phone
operating system platforms in India - Android, iOS and newly KaiOS, which
is provided through Jiophones [1]. Jiophone users can download and install
the Wikipedia app on the JioStore.
This first release is focused on how to make it easier to read Wikipedia on
a phone that does not have a touch screen. The platform supports over 100
languages for reading, and we appreciate that volunteers have fully
translated the Wikipedia app user interface into five Indian languages so
far: Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Odia, and Punjabi. The app will continue to
have updates and reach more countries over time.
If you (or someone you know) own a Jiophone, please give the app a try by
downloading it from the JioStore. We would like to hear about your
experience with it. Let us know about issues or bugs through the in-app
feedback feature, through the project talk page [2], or through Phabricator
[3].
To enable the app to reach readers in even more Indian languages, we would
greatly appreciate additional translations of the user interface on
Translatewiki.net [4].
To know more about the app and our work, and why we believe this project is
so important to help us reach new users, you can see the main page for the
app [5] and the Questions and Answers page [6]. We welcome your comments,
suggestions, and feedback on the related talk page [2].
Lastly, please, do share this message on other venues of interest for
community members in India.
