Hello,
Hope this email will find you well. The preparation of Wikimania is going
on, and we hope to see enthusiastic participation from India this year as
well.
You know that in addition to the main Wikimania scholarship, there has been
a practice to offer scholarship to Indic Wikimedians. As per the earlier
practice, WMIN and CIS-A2K is offering full scholarships which includes:
- The cost of an individual's round-trip travel as arranged by CIS-A2K
- Shared accommodation for up to 6 nights as arranged by CIS-A2K
- Conference registration fee. Note that some meals during the
conference are covered by the conference registration fee, such as lunches
and receptions
- The cost of obtaining a visa (Visa Fees)
The participants are selected based on the decision of Wikimania
Scholarship Committee 2018 and were next in line as per their analysis to
receive full scholarship. Note: WMIN or CIS didn't make these selection.
Following is the suggestion list of Wikimania committee, the Wikimedians
who have been selected are:
- User:Jayantanth
- User:Shyamal
- User:Aliva Sahoo
We congratulate them for the selection, and hope for a smooth visa process
ahead. :)
We are unable to support partial scholarship for budgetary constraint.
Thanks
Tito Dutta

Subject: [Maps-l] Map internationalization launched everywhere, AND
embedded maps now live on 276 Wikipedias
To: maps-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
As of today, interactive (Kartographer) maps no longer display in the
language of the territory mapped; instead, you’ll read them in the content
language of the wiki where they appear—or in the language their authors
specify (subject to availability of multilingual data). In addition,
mapframe, the feature that automatically embeds dynamic maps right on a
wiki page, is now live on most Wikipedias that lacked the feature. (Not
included in the mapframe launch are nine Wikipedias [1] that use the
stricter version of Flagged Revisions).
If you you’re new to mapframe, this Kartographer help page [2] shows how to
get started putting dynamic maps on your pages. If you’d like to read more
about map internationalization: this Special Update [3] explains the
feature and its limiations; this post [4] and this one [5] describe the
uses of the new parameter, lang=”xx”, which lets you specify a map’s
language. And here are some example maps [6] to illustrate the new
capabilities.
These features could not have been created without the generous programming
contributions and advice of our many map-loving volunteers, including
Yurik, Framawiki, Naveenpf, TheDJ, Milu92, Astirlin, Evad37, Pigsonthewing,
Mike Peel, Eran Roz, Gareth and Abbe98. My apologies to anyone I’ve
missed.
The Map Improvements 2018 [7] project wraps up at the end of June, so
please give internationalized maps and mapframe a try soon and give us your
feedback on the project talk page [8]. We’re listening.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone knows an amazing animation artist? We are hiring someone for a
one-time project for animation video for Punjabi Wikipedia. Although, our
budget is small and the video duration will be around 90 seconds, please
let me know if anyone knows someone who might be right fit for the project.
Warm Regards,
Rupika
Please see this, in case you also got notifications, this might be helpful
Thanks

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Information on "Multiple failed attempts to log in"
emails
To: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hello,
Many of you may have been receiving emails in the last 24 hours warning you
of "Multiple failed attempts to log in" with your account. I wanted to let
you know that the Wikimedia Foundation's Security team is aware of the
situation, and working with others in the organization on steps to decrease
the success of attacks like these.
The exact source is not yet known, but it is not originating from our
systems. That means it is an external effort to gain unauthorized access to
random accounts. These types of efforts are increasingly common for
websites of our reach. A vast majority of these attempts have been
unsuccessful, and we are reaching out personally to the small number of
accounts which we believe have been compromised.
While we are constantly looking at improvements to our security systems and
processes to offset the impact of malicious efforts such as these, the best
method of prevention continues to be the steps each of you take to
safeguard your accounts. Because of this, we have taken steps in the past
to support things like stronger password requirements,[1] and we continue
to encourage everyone to take some routine steps to maintain a secure
computer and account. That includes regularly changing your passwords,[2]
actively running antivirus software on your systems, and keeping your
system software up to date.
My team will continue to investigate this incident, and report back if we
notice any concerning changes. If you have any questions, please contact
the Support and Safety team (susa{{(a)}}wikimedia.org).

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Recognizing the one-year anniversary of the
Wikipedia block in Turkey
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Staff (All) <
wmfall(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hello,
Today the Wikimedia Foundation, in cooperation with a number of volunteers
who attended the Wikimedia Conference, have posted on Twitter and Facebook
a video message speaking to the one-year anniversary of the block of
Wikipedia in Turkey.
The video re-enforces our message that this block is a lost opportunity
both for the people of Turkey and the rest of the world. Any assistance
that you all can offer in terms of helping circulate the video amongst your
networks would be greatly appreciated!

We have also made the video available on Wikimedia Commons if you would

This is a part of our ongoing efforts around the block in Turkey, and done
with input from members of the local community in Turkey. We GREATLY
appreciate the help of everyone involved in the development and all of you
who are sharing these messages. If you have any questions, please let us
know.
