Hi,
I had sent following mail to the WMIN members list about 10 days back.
As there was no reply for 5 days, I sent the same again adding
individual ids of EC members.
There is not a single line of reply to the mail. Not even any
acknowledgment of receiving the mail.
I am wondering if my email id is blacklisted by EC members or there is
no one in the current EC who is nominated/interested in responding OR
WMIN is completely shutdown.
If any list members have any idea about the current status of WMIN,
please let others know.
Regards
-Sudhanwa
Here is the mail I sent to members list 10 days back.
Dear WMIN members,
There are no updates of any kind from the EC in the last few months.
What is the current status of Sowmyan? Is he still there or really gone?
There are not even membership renewal reminders now. Assuming that
Sowmyan is not there, where the forms are to be sent?
What is the status of the grants-earlier ones and the new ones applied for..
What are the current projects happening in/through WMIN?
What is the current membership renewal status? What is the current count?
WMIN website is not updated for quite some time. Who is looking into
those activities?
Can someone from the EC enlighten the members please.
Thanks and regards

Hi,
Tamil Development Board (an autonomous institution under Government of
Tamilnadu) releases its Encyclopedia (10 volumes, 7407 pages) and
Children's Encyclopedia (10 volumes, 969 pages) under Creative Commons
license. Tamil Wikipedians lead by Prof. C. R. Selvakumar and Prof. P. R.
Nakkeeran, (Director, Tamil Virtual Academy) spearheaded this initiative
coinciding with Tamil Wikipedia's 10 years celebrations.
An official confirmation (in Tamil) can be seen at
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Letter_from_Tamil_Devel…
Scanned copies of these works are already available at
http://tamilvu.org/library/kulandaikal/lku00/html/lku00ind.htm
At Tamil Wikipedia, we are discussing how we can get this content typed and
transferred to WikiSource. Doing so can be a good model to encourage more
such works to be released in public domain.
Following are two options I can think of:
1. Volunteers type all the content. Besides taking years to complete, this
won't do justice for the value of time of volunteers who can do more
valuable work than typing mechanically.
A program like IT@School present in Kerala or a contest can encourage more
people to join this effort but not all communities can't emulate this model
successfully.
2. Request WMF to give a grant to the owner of the content and let them
hand over the typed content to Wikisource volunteers who will upload and
wikify the content.
This will ensure maintaining the spirit of volunteerism and yet getting the
work done in a professional and time bound manner.
Numerous works in Wikisource are such ready made content uploaded already
in the web through other projects like Project Gutenberg.
If providing grants to non-Wikimedia organizations is an issue, a grant
towards this can be given to community / chapter who will then outsource
the typing work.
I welcome community's input on any other model for this as India has vast
amount of literature and works like this are waiting to be transfered to
Wikisource. This is one area where we can add lot of content to Wiki
projects at once.

As you may be aware, two members of the Executive Committee of Wikimedia
Chapter India have submitted their resignations with immediate effect.
However, there has been not any internal action or response or a call
notice for an urgent Teleconference for further discussion on possible
actions from the remaining office bearers namely the Secretary and
Treasurer.
Wikimedia India Chapter is going through a critical phase with several
important and crucial decisions and deadlines pending. The surprising
resignations from two board members at this juncture has made this a
complex affair. We have very important timelines and deadlines to be
complied with, in the coming few days.
Due to the above critical situation, a resolution has been put forth within
the official Internal Wiki (board members' wiki) on whether to accept or
reject the resignations.
One of us from the EC will be informing you of the decision output of this
resolution duly.
This is for your general information.

Hi,
http://freetamilebooks.com/ is an initiative that releases Creative Commons
licensed ebooks (epub. mobi and pdf formats) for Android, iOS and ebook
devices. This is a non-profit, volunteer driven effort with participation
from Tamil FOSS enthusiasts and Tamil Wikipedians.
Reently, we celebrated releasing our 100th ebook on the project's first
birthday.
In the context of content donations happening across the country, I thought
it would be appropriate to bring this to Indian Wikipedia community's
notice since this has helped us create awareness and discussion about Open
Knowledge movement.
If any other language community is interested in creating a similar
project, we would be glad to help.
Thanks,
Ravi
Dear Wikimedia India Chapter members and other interested stakeholders in
the list,
As another EC member, let me assure you all that most of the remaining EC
members are actively contemplating and working towards reaching the
earliest solutions to remove any deadlocks, in a fast track mode.
The resolution on whether to accept or reject the resignations by Moksh
Juneja and Pranav Curumsey have been PASSED AS "ACCEPTED" by 3 against 1
votes with one member abstaining from any actions.
Now that the present EC has TWO vacancies to be filled, we are in the
process of co-opting two senior chapter members, ideally with a consensus,
or if necessary, again through voting. A resolution to this effect is
already placed in the internal board wiki. Being the case of an emergency,
the resolution will be set for voting till tomorrow mid-night.
We earnestly expect that we will be able to fulfill all the seven positions
by this. We will also elect a new president (and if necessary other office
bearers) from among us.
Any pending issues / actions regarding elections and other affairs will be
discussed and decided by consensus (or a majority), soon after restoring
the EC to its full strength.
Any decisions on hiring and other critical matters are already suspended.
It may also stay suspended further (until a freshly elected EC come into
power) unless found absolutely necessary.
The new structure will be effective until upcoming general elections. On
successful completion of the elections, a fresh EC will take over the reins.
This is for your general information.
Thank you
On behalf of the Executive Committee,
Viswanathan Prabhakaran
