Hi
Now that Dravid has retired, we will be seeing a spike in editing of the
articles. A lot of this may be highly emotional and the article may take a
severe POV battering.
I suppose POV monitoring and intervention would be more required on the
Indic language Wikis where there may be fewer editing eyeballs.
Request everyone to watchlist Rahul Dravid's article on all Indic language
wikis.
Regards

Hoi,
The good news is that there is approval for the Gujarati Wikisource. We are
quite happy to post a bug asking for the creation of this new Wiki but for
one small detail. There is information lacking that is necessary for the
creation of this new wiki.
I am happy to share this news and I hope it will not take long before I can
inform you about the creation of the Gujarati Wikisource.
Thanks,
Gerard

Subject: [Wmfcc-l] The kind, gentle approach to retaining new editors
To: Communications Committee <wmfcc-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
You might remember Susan Hewitt from her
time<https://donate.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FundraiserLandingPage?uselang=en&…>
on
the top of Wikipedia during the last fundraiser.
Susan has become something of a den mother for WikiProject:Gastropods,
where she is the unofficial welcoming committee. At a lightening talk
recently in New York City, she argued that WikiProjects can be an important
tool for editor retention and development. Here's a new blog post about her
and WP:Gastropods.

<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Susan_Hewitt_and_shell.JPG>
Susan Hewitt of WikiProject:Gastropods
At the Wikimedia Foundation, we’re developing a number of tools to improve
editor retention, from a dramatically simpler editing
interface<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/13/help-test-the-first-visual-editor-deve…>
to
improved article feedback
tools<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/20/a-new-way-to-contribute-to-wikipedia/>.
But
what if keeping new editors and helping them become productive long-term
contributors were simpler than all that?
Susan Hewitt <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Invertzoo> believes
fostering a little wiki love and a sense of camaraderie will go a long way
toward increasing new-editor retention. She is the informal den mother to
WikiProject:Gastropods<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gastropods>,
one of the 2,000
WikiProjects<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject> on
English Wikipedia organized by editors who share an affinity for a
particular subject area and want to see the quality of those articles
improved.
“[Wikipedia] is a very big place,” said Hewitt, who lives in New York City.
“You start editing, it’s like you walked in off the street — it’s as big
and echoey asGrand
Central<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal>.
It’s like an enormous hospital or an enormous high school, where you don’t
know what’s going on, and you don’t know where you’re supposed to go, and
you’re disoriented by it.”
According to Hewitt, technological tools are vital to improving the editing
experience and she expressed gratitude to MediaWiki developers, paid and
volunteer, who consistently improve the editing experience. But the
question of human interactions remains even after the code is deployed. We
should approach each other on Wikipedia, she said, “with this attitude
which is kind, considerate, warm, appreciative, thankful and gentle. It’s
just like everyday life. This is a really amazing project, there’s a lot of
people working on it, and in a sort of vague way they know you’ve got to
try to be polite.”
She has developed a system for welcoming new editors to the project and she
has become adept at marshaling their strengths for improving Wikipedia. She
uses AlexNewArtBot <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AlexNewArtBot> to
monitor new articles related to
gastropods<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastropods>,
one of the largest taxonomic classes on the planet and better known as
snails and slugs. When she sees an unfamiliar new editor, she drops by
their talk page with a colorful
template<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gastropods/Invitation,_b…>
and
words of encouragement. She invites editors to participate in the
WikiProject using an array of pictures and barnstars, like a deep water sea
snail in the genus *Guildfordia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guildfordia_yoka>
* or the luminous*Janolus fuscus<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janolus_fuscus>
*.
Her methods are paying off.
“To me, the moment Susan came to me and invited me to the project was
crucial, essential,” said Daniel
Cavallari<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Daniel_Cavallari>,
a biologist living in São Paulo, Brazil. “If I hadn’t been welcomed and
helped when I joined in, perhaps I wouldn’t be editing at Wikipedia
presently.”
Hewitt and Cavallari have never met in person, and maybe never will. They
are thousands of miles apart, but they share a mutual respect for the
project and they improve it constantly. Cavallari noted that he has had a
much different experience editing on his native Portuguese language
Wikipedia, where some editors have not been as kind to him.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chromodoris_willani_for_nudipixel.jpg>
A photo of Chromodoris willani, by Alex Jenner, Wikimedia Commons
Another member of Hewitt’s circle of wiki love is Alexander
Jenner<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Antarctic-adventurer>,
an astrophysicist living in Tokyo, Japan. Just like Cavallari, Jenner has
never met Hewitt in person, but he is grateful she welcomed him. Given his
interest in scuba diving and underwater photography, Hewitt encouraged him
to contribute his photos to Commons.
“Susan, she was doing other areas of Gastropods and she said ‘Nobody’s
doing nudibranchs <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudibranch>, so we’re happy
to have somebody doing it.’” Jenner noted. “I guess I got a buzz when I was
the first person to add a high definition photo of a species that didn’t
exist [on Wikipedia]. It was like, ‘I did that photo.’”
Jenner said he had a much different experience on another WikiProject,
where there is no welcoming committee and there are often heated arguments.
If he had joined the other project before Gastropods, he said, “I doubt I
would have edited nearly as much. That early phase before one becomes
accustomed to the ways of Wikipedia is very important.”
“Susan most certainly made a difference in my case,” he added.

To: "kiwix-testing(a)lists.sourceforge.net" <
kiwix-testing(a)lists.sourceforge.net>, olpc-france(a)lists.laptop.org
Dear testers,
we finally have fixed the big bug impacting loading of ZIM files with
0.8x versions of the OLPC OS. So, Kiwix should work now and be able to
load any ZIM file. No bug anymore concerning Kiwix on Sugar is still
open on our side.
Please test the last version and give us a feedback:
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/fr/sugar/addon/4483
Build your own small custom ZIM file there:
* https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sp%C3%A9cial:Livre
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Book
If everything still runs fine, we plan to introduce pre-packaged .xo
files (Kiwix+content) during the summer.

*Agenda*:
- *Native language transliterations in English Wikipedia articles* -
Swaroop G Rao (User:MikeLynch)
In English Wikipedia articles, articles with strong non-English
connections usually carry a transliteration (along with pronunciation) in
the language of origin. There was many disputes regarding these
transliterations. This presentation will focus primarily on these
transliterations, exploring many possible points of view into the problem.
Since India is a large country of over 28 states and 22 official languages
(and hundreds of other recognized languages), we can expect this problem to
be more pronounced in Indian articles. And not surprisingly, it is so. This
is a contentious issue many a times; and more often than not, regional
polarization occurs, even among established editors. Swaroop will speak
about looking into these problems objectively, and in the meantime, also
looking into possible solutions. Along the way, he will also present some
case studies of contentious discussions/edit wars which have already taken
place.
- *NASSCOM Initiative - Engineering Services* - RadhaKrishna Arvapally
(User:Arkrishna)
NASSCOM (Under Human Resources Ministry) has few initiative of which one
of them is Education Initiative: Under this initiative, NASSCOM aims to
enhance graduate employability through appropriate skill enrichment and act
as bridge between industry, academia and government. As being part of one
of the working groups, RadhaKrishna made a framework to add WikiMedia to
this course. He will be talking more about this.
- *Kerala Sarvavijnanakosham and Malayalam Wikipedia *- Ramesh N G
(User:Rameshng)
This story is about an effort to increase the content of the Malayalam
Wikipedia where the community is successful in getting the content from the
Kerala Government officially published Encyclopedia called as
SarvavijnanaKosham. In 2008, Kerala government Education minister announced
about giving the content of SarvavijnanaKosham to Malayalam Wikipedia. The
SarvavijnanaKosham contains nearly 21 volumes, each with ~1600 article; out
of which four volumes are published online. The license of the website
content is changed to GNU Free Documentation License 1.2. Malayalam
wikipedian a groups 7 users started transferring the content from the
website to Malayalam Wikipedia. Under the project while transferring the
content the users make sure that it wikified, possible images added,
interwiki given etc. This presentation is about the idea behind getting the
content, the project coordination, current status and future of this
project. This project is one of the motivating project and rich in content
where we are getting the article content which are written by subject
matter expert in SarvavijnanaKosham for last 70 years.
