Hi all,
Ever wondered how you could type in your own language and do much more fun
with your phone; browsing Indic language wikipedia articles to commenting
on friend's facebook posts to tweeting? So, here is something exciting
coming on Open source!
Recently we had a guest, YuviPanda, a former developer with Wikimedia
Foundation and an open source geek. Yuvi spent spent some with us and I got
a chance to explain how problematic it is for a mobile user to type in
Indic languages. Though most smartphones have sound font support and
rendering typing in Indic languages was far from reality, at least to me.
While explaining the problem which many others would be facing while
posting a status on facebook or tweeting many end users would like to have
few major things in a new typing tool:
- A simple interface and easy navigation
- Options to switch typing schemes/languages (Indic ↔ English)
- Readability: Font size should be made to be read properly. Based on the
jQuery.ime (https://github.com/wikimedia/jquery.ime) for Indic languages
Yuvi created a prototype (http://goo.gl/jH3TO).
In rounds of testing and bug fixing finally it is here:

Right now it works online for most smartphones having Indic and rendering
support. Someone can use it online from the same link above. The offline
version works fro iPhone and Yuvi is working on fixing bugs for Android.
The offline app will soon be available for Android. Once it works perfectly
with Android it will be made available for free in Android market. We are
still to test this for Symbian, Blackberry and Windows, 3 other market

I am still in the pipeline to persuade to add a feature for searching on
Indic wikipedias from this app. Please join me clapping for Yuvi for this
amazing tool and persuading him for adding the search option for Indic
wikipedias which will enable a user to search in a respective language
wikipedia by typing a particular word in this tool!

Hello all,
First of all, sorry for delayed report.
Wikipedia Meet up - 6 was held at Lois Kahn Plaza, IIM Campus on 1st Dec.
After some brief introduction, new members were given some basic idea about things related to Wikipedia. Some discussions were carried out regrading Wikipedia. Conflicts of Interest was one of them.
Then we discussed about our new project on Ahmedabad named "વિકિપરિયોજના અમદાવાદ"(Wikiproject Ahmedabad) in Gujarati Wikipedia. In this we discussed lots of thing including how to make this project successful, what kind of strategies we can apply, which types of articles can be included and other stuff.
Another key agendas of meetup discussed at large were how to make grow community in Ahmedabad, enlarge viewership of Gujarati Wikipedia? Everyone gave his own idea. We had some wonderful things to take on. After talking much about these issues,we decided that Wikipedia workshop will be the best way to increase potential editors. So we are planning to arrange one workshop on 16th December. After finalization, detail will be posted on mailing list soon.
At the end, a small editing session was held to get newcomers' hands tested on Wikipedia.

Here is an update on the hiring process for the position of Programme
Director:
To quickly summarize from my first post: we began seeking applications
for this post in August, 2012, and held our first round of interviews
with two candidates on October 7th, 2012. Following those interviews, we
continued to accept applications for the position of Programme Director
up until the 6th of November. At the final closing date, we had received
32 applications for the position in total.
Sunil and I evaluated all of the candidates on their knowledge and
experience with openness, civil society, transparency and diversity, as
well as their proficiency in Indic languages and technology. Further,
those candidates that were being considered for interviews were asked if
they were available to attend the interviews on the proposed dates and
were informed of the salary for the position. After this evaluation
process, 8 applicants in total were longlisted, and their application
details were submitted to the recruitment committee. Two of those
candidates were invited to the interviews on the 7th of October.
Following those interviews, the recruitment committee decided to hold a
second round of interviews with 5 further candidates from the longlist.
On November 10th, 2012, we held the second round of interviews at our
Bengaluru office. Five candidates attended the interviews. The
interviews were carried out by Arun Ramarathnam, Adethya Sudarsanan,
Nitika Tandon and Sunil Abraham, who replaced Nishant Shah on the
committee as the CIS representative. Unfortunately, Jessie Wild from the
Wikimedia Foundation was unable to physically attend the interviews on
the 10th, so she carried out interviews with the five applicants
remotely during the week leading up to the interviews.
The interviews were carried out in a panel format. The recruitment
committee split into two groups of two, and each group interviewed one
candidate simultaneously for a one hour period. The interviews began at
9am and went until 3pm, with a break for lunch at 12pm. After the
interviews, the four committee members met for a two hour period to
discuss the interviews.
In both the first round of interviews on October 7th and the second
round on November 10th, the candidates were evaluated on the following
criteria: analytical thinking, interpersonal skills, communication
skills, relevant experience, understanding of the responsibilities of
the position, understanding of the A2K and Wikimedia movements, comfort
with unstructured work environments, experience in community driven
projects, motivators for job, mission alignment with job and ethical
fiber. Other factors that the committee took into consideration were
fundraising experience, presentability to media, their proficiency in
multiple languages, their experience working with the Wikimedia
community, and whether or not they are willing to work out of Delhi.
On the 20th of November, a conference call was held between all five
members of the recruitment committee to discuss the interviews and the
next steps in the hiring process.
Out of the 7 applicants that were interviewed, two candidates were
selected to continue on to the next step in the hiring process. As was
mentioned in our first update, we would like these two candidates to
undergo an online assignment under community scrutiny before the final
candidate is selected.
For this public exercise, we suggest the following assignment: both
finalists will prepare a 1200 words (approx. two pages) essay on what
they will do/achieve as Programme Director of the A2K programme over a
year's time, using the A2K programme workplan

as a reference. 300 words must be written about the first 60 days (2
months) of their work. These essays will be posted under pen names, and
the community will be given two calendar weeks to publicly pose
questions to the candidates and receive responses.
After this point, the committee will use the feedback from the community
to make a final decision on which candidate will become the Programme
Director.

Hi Pradeep,
Education is linked with Spoken Wikipedia and e-learning. And gender-gap is
separate track, and we are hopeful more women contributors find it easy to
contribute via donating their voice.
So, all tracks will be somewhat connected to 'Spoken Wikipedia for Indian
Languages'
And even if someone is uncomfortable with donating their voice, offcourse -
we need volunteers to edit and develop articles, only after that it will be
easy to record it.
As we are focusing on health related articles as priority, we are following
WikiProject Medicine Chart. Kindly consider visiting -

It will be great to see many Indian Languages in that table.
Bottom Line : Spoken Wikipedia will be primary focus, at same time we need

empower India and how it can be beneficial to disabled.
Many attendees agreed to volunteer to record developed articles on Indian
Language Wikipedia. Another discussion happened regarding having tie-up
with cell phone companies to circulate recorded articles.
Event concluded with presentation by U.S Embassy Adviser on 'Education and
US' followed by visa related questions and answers.
