Hello all,
This makes the "featured content" available and share-able in more machine
readable format and also gives many possibilities.
1. Blogs / Websites can now carry content feeds from Wikipedia /
WikiProjects
2. Feeds can be posted automatically to facebook pages to share featured
content socially.
3. Mobile and apps (but untill fonts / rendering is fixed, it might not be
as much useful)
I just tried to pull up "On This Day" content from Tamil Wikipedia onto my
blog with a widget, it was just matter of few minutes to make it
happen. Please share this with content websites and if they are interested
in giving us some space, please take this forward. Let me know if you need
help in setting up these for your wiki's.
This will however be fruitful only if featured content gets
generated consistently. You might also want to read more about importance
of Front Page content(in Tamil Wiki Community) here[1]
Regards,
Srikanth L

Subject: [Wikitech-l] FeaturedFeeds deployed
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Yesterday we deployed FeaturedFeeds[1] to the cluster (thanks,
Arthur!) Everything looks good so far, examples of feeds: [2], [3].
We haven't enabled feed links in the sidebar like on our staging wiki
at [4] - I wonder if we should enable them on opt-in or opt-out basis.
Overall, I'd apreciate your critics, comments, suggestions. Also,
please assist your local communities in seting up their feeds, especially
if you know less common languages.

A good idea is to do similar to Wikimania, by inviting bids from respective
local city communities. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2013_bids
A panel consisting of representatives from the Wikimedia India Chapter,
Community and the Wikimedia Foundation can be formed to select the city.
I think we need to develop this page further
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/WikiConference_India_2012
While in no particular order, it is advisable to select a city in a
different region each time.

Since we have not one, but two bids from India, I think that is important
to be announced here (I would rather prefer if all of you could work
together in a single bid, but if is not possible, at least list both under
the right section in the page)

Hello! Many of you would know PlaneMad (Arun Ganesh), and I had asked
him to see if he can design anything for Wikipedia.in, etc. He's sent
me a mockup that I absolutely love, and am willing to spend time
htmlizing. Thoughts?

questions that a user has:
1) where am i?
2) what do i get here?
3) how do i find it?
the current landing pages are actually quite cryptic to someone new.
something like this would help someone explore and learn. click any
language tab and all the text changes to that language. The project
boxes stay visible, the search flyout loads on hover. will it work?

Friends,
We would like to inform you with the deepest regret that we have considered
calling off our plans to set up a Wikipedia stall at the Kolkata Book Fair
2012.
Even though it was a late initiative on our part considering the enormity
of the KBF, we had put the extra effort in pursuing matters with the
organizers. However, as reported before in this thread, negotiations with
the organizers regarding the stall booking failed to reach any suitable
conclusion. The amount of 2 lakhs for the space itself not only exceeds our
overall budget for the programme, it is too large a sum to be considered
for an investment into an outreach programme, the return from which may not
be tangible in the near future. Finally, the organizers did let us know
that they won't be able to provide any space even if we have a
recommendation from the Chief Minister. And with the inauguration barely
less that week away, we are left with no other option to explore from our
end.
We thank everybody for their support, especially Hisham and Nitika, the
India chapter and the WMF. We are hopeful of overcoming the disappointment
and prepare early for KBF 2013, while we continue with our other activities
in Kolkata.
Thanks and regards,
Kalyan Sarkar
