Hoi,
I just learned that Erik has created a special version of the traffic
statistics for India.
http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN_India/TablesPageViewsMonthly.htm
When I look at the numbers, I do not understand why Malayalam is doing so
poorly. It is not that it has a limited number of viewers, it is that it has
gone down so much. This is also true for other Wikipedias. What is happening
and, more importantly what can be done about it ???
Thanks,
Gerard
Hi everyone
I mentioned the contribute campaign on the mailing list earlier, I wanted to
inform everyone that the pages have been set up on Meta. I would like to
invite participation from anyone who would like to support the Indian
language projects. There are 3 distinct areas that the contribute campaign
is going to focus on, the English Wikipedia, the Social Media and the Indic
Language wikis.
The Indic language contribute campaign seeks to bring more attention and
drive up participation on our local language projects. The essence of the
campaign is to turn readers into editors. The motivation is purely to seek
non-financial contributions from our readers in the form of edits.
The Contribute campaign page:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Contrib
The Indic Language Wikipedias:

Dear Wikimedians,
Here is one more solution from Santhosh and team for the Indian Languages.
After Malayalam and Hindi dictionary bot, now it is the turn of Kannada.
Vasudev Kamath has customized this solution for Kannada.
But unlike Malayalam and Hindi, Kannada dictionary bot completely relies on
*Kannada Wiktionary*, since Kannada does not have a free s/w licensed
dictionary database.
Read the blog post for more details:

Friends,
Based on the code of our very successful dictionary bot, Vasudev
Kamath launched English-Kannada dictionary bot service. Unlike
Malayalam or Hindi, Kannada does not have a free s/w licensed
dictionary database. So the bot completely relies on the Kannada
wiktionary. See the blog post:
http://vasudevkamath.blogspot.com/2010/11/jabber-dictionary-bot-for-kannada…
And English-Malayalam bot now uses Malayalam wiktionary along with our
dict database. It crossed 8000 users now. I had written a blog post
about this here:
http://thottingal.in/blog/2010/11/20/dictionary-jabber-buddy-bots/
Parsing wiktionary content is not an easy job, it still have some
bugs. Wiktionary has highly unstructured data or machine consumption.
Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi bots are running from our VPS server.
Thanks
Santhosh Thottingal.

Hello!
Achal and I are speaking at GLOBALOCAL: The Forum for content on 26
November 2010. http://www.newdelhi.gbo.org/en/events/
We will be speaking about the Commons as a resource and how Wikipedia
is a stellar example of how collaborative material is being produced
and published on the internet.
Would anyone have examples of the Wikimedia Commons/Wikipedia being
used in the mainstream publishing world?
Interestingly, this is one while Bishaka will be speaking in Mumbai!
Thank you.
Best,
Gautam

Indeed. I saw your name in the program. I am also speaking in the
same panel and will be speaking on the future of enterprises in the
era of copyleft, wikiculture and p2p practices. Looking forward to
talking to you there.

Dear all,
I am speaking at the Computer Society of India's annual convention on Friday
in Mumbai in the ienterprise track. The programme is at:
http://www.csi-2010.org/cnvntnprog.html
My presentation is tentatively titled:
Edit by Edit: Wikipedia, Indic Languages and Free Knowledge Creation
I am working on this presentation this week, using WMF's decks which board
members often use - and a pile of material from the newsletter (thanks
again, all who worked on this - very very useful) and many emails that I've
saved from this list.
If anyone has any thoughts that you feel it is important for me to include
in my presentation, do email me offlist.
Cheers
Bishakha
