For those of you who will be attending:
We are just about ready for all of you (projecting 650+ Wikimaniacs, but
it could be larger depending on local attendance.)
Attention WMF-sponsored attendees (e.g., scholarships, organizers): You
will be getting an email in the next 24 hours with information to help you
in your travels (e.g., insurance and tips on what to bring/expect/fight
delays, etc), your stay in Cape Town, and accommodations. WMF Staff/board
and others have been given information directly from the WMF in the past
week.
Another communication to everyone who is registered via Eventbrite will go
out early this week with updates.
You can register online until July 13th and there are discounts for
residents of South Africa on that page
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Registration>. After that date
you can come to the registration desk at the conference.
If you want to schedule a Meet Up or participate in the lightening talks,
please sign up soon at https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meetups
We are also pleased to report that the water crises in Cape Town has
somewhat abated due to heavy rains recently and conservation. There will
be a water sustainability edit-a-thon
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_edit-a-thon>held as
part of the pre-conference program next week.
Another update about what sessions will be recorded and streamed will be
posted before the conference.
And finally, remember that it is winter in Cape Town and check the weather
forecast before you go. It's been very cold and wet lately! We are
providing attendees with 'wool beanies' with the conference logo, but for
anything warmer than that, you are on your own :-)
On behalf of the Organizing Team of Wikimania '18, we are looking forward
to seeing all of you next week.
Ellie

Thank you.
As I have just posted on the page's talk-page:
"How do we get to the city centre/ event venue from the airport? The
Cape Town page says to use MyCiTi - that's a bus, I think, but it's
not clear. What does it cost? Is exact change needed? Do we pay on the
bus, or at the airport?"

There are several options, and yes that is a bus shuttle and the costs are
listed.

Hi everyone,
I'll be arriving in Cape Town a day earlier than other scholarship recipients, on July 15th, and will be staying for one night in the nearby Stay Easy Cape Town City Bowl. The minimal rate for both single and double rooms seems to be the same. Would anyone be interested in sharing?
I'll be making the reservation in about 48 hours, so you'll need to inform me ASAP.
Best,
Abbad.
Hello, hello,
as in previous year's, I'm organizing a WMCON Follow-Up Day during the
pre-conference of Wikimania. The idea is to continue some conversations of
the Wikimedia Conference, which are not covered within the official program
of Wikimania.
So join me (and others) for this year's WMCON Follow-Up Day. It will take
place on Thursday, July 19, between 9:00 and 17:00 in room 3204 (32nd floor
of the Cape Southern Sun Hotel). You don't have to have been a participant
of the previous Wikimedia Conference in Berlin to be with us, but *y**ou
must have a ticket for the 2nd day of the pre-conference*.
We will have at least three 90 min workshops, which will cover:
* the future of the Wikimedia Conference
* Growing and diversifying your communities through minority language
editing (some call it "Diaspora editing", but it's not limited to that)
* Global communications (campaigning)
We have also a 4th slot of 90 min available. If you have a spontaneous idea
for 90 min workshop, let me know. Maybe it fits!

Best regards,
Cornelius

Hello all,
*(sorry for crost-posting)*
If you're into Wikidata and attending Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town, you'll
probably be interested in the Wikidata booth!
Located in the core of the conference venue[0], this table will be
dedicated to the Wikidata community, and an information point for anyone
wanting to learn more about Wikidata.
This booth being community-driven, we need help from everyone to take care
of this space, make it friendly and animated, and engage with the
participants!
To take a shift, you don't need to know everything about Wikidata, you
should mostly be able to answer simple questions, be friendly with people,
and redirect them to volunteers or employees if necessary.
If you're willing to take a shift, or organize something special with the
other community members, please register on this page:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikimania_2018#Wikidata_community_bo…
If you have any question or idea, feel free to contact me.
Cheers, Léa

*Hi everyone*!
Are you coming to Cape Town this South African winter? And can you spare a
couple of hours at the conference? Then please join us as a trainer at
the *Learn
to Edit desk*!
The Learn to Edit desk will (most probably) located near the registration
desk and will be open from Friday till Sunday, all day. Aim is to help
people taking their first steps on the wiki: getting an account, exploring
the different pages and doing an edit or an upload. We'll have tables with
laptops, for people that did not bring their own, or maybe want to edit on
a mobile device in the future.
*For this I'm in need of Wikimedians who would like to share their
knowledge*, and it would be nice if you...:
- Have good knowledge of the English language
- Maybe even another language? French, Afrikaans, ...?
- Know how to edit Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons
- Know how to explain things in a simple and patient way
- Have approximately one and a half/two hours to spare each day.
*I'll make us volunteers a scheduale* and will take your wishes into
account if you want to attend certain talks or meetups and are not
available. Even if you cannot make it every day, please let me know if you
want to help, I'm sure I can work around that.
Send me an email!
Kind regards, Vriendelijke groet,
Ciell
