Hello all!
A more expansive version of this email was sent out last night via
Eventbrite, but I’ve posted a stripped down version here for those of you
whose spam filters don’t get along with Eventbrite. We have some important
information that we would like to convey to you to insure that conference
continues to go smoothly.
FOOD
Your lanyard guarantees you unlimited access to any and all of the food
stands throughout the four levels (3 through Ground), which are open from
10 am to 4pm each day. Your badge also gets you into the lunch buffet on
the ground floor, which has a more expanded menu for those of you looking
for vegetarian or vegan options.
CLOSING PARTY
We have a limited number of people we can accommodate at the closing party,
so tickets have been issued to people whose registration guarantees access
to the closing party. If you have any questions about this, come by the reg
desk to discuss with me.
However, we do have some extra tickets left! We will be releasing all of
those left over tickets at 12:45pm on Sunday, during the lunch break but
before the lightning talks. Those can be claimed on a first-come
first-serve basis at the registration desk on the 3rd floor at that time.
Registration that afternoon closes at 2pm. At that point, any unclaimed
tickets will be handed off to the organizers of the event, who will give
them out at the door on a first-come first-serve basis as well.
Buses will depart the hotel for the Closing Party between 6:15 - 6:40pm.
Buses will return starting at 10:30pm. The restaurant closes at 12:00am,
and the final bus will leave for the hotel at that time.
LANYARDS
Black lanyards indicate that the attendee does not want to be photographed. We
ran out of the beaded lanyards during the pre-conference so some delegates
were issued plain yellow lanyards. But we have more in stock! If you got a
plain lanyard but would like to change it in for a beaded one, swing by the
regdesk and we’ll get you sorted.
TSHIRTS
We will be releasing any unclaimed tees Sunday afternoon for those of you
who would like to grab one.
Thank you all so much! Welcome to Wikimania 2018, and I hope you enjoy the
remainder of the conference!

Hi All,
Are you coming to Wikimania 2018
<https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2018>? *Bring books
with you to share!*
There will be a corner where you can *swap your books* with books other
participants will bring; *or leave your books* for Cape Town Library.
Swapping books <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_swapping> is not just a
fun activity: those could be a source of good references for content on our
sites, or just items you'd like to donate/bring back home because they're
cool anyway—maybe they feature gorgeous pictures, or a language/script many
people may have never seen before, etc. Any language is welcome—books in in
english . are more likely to be reused by several attendees, though!
I created this page on Wikimania 2018 mediawiki - For those will be
attending and want to participate to the bookswap they can use this page

Dear organizers,
Thank you very much for organizing such an amazing Wikimania, much
appreciated. The question which I would like to ask, is how to get a Vegan
food? I have seen no any information on that matter, no marks, or
announcements. I know that there was some kind of chatting on that matter
at telegram the day before yesterday, but I have no access to that
discussion. Moreover, I have seen that even some vegetarian food consists
the eggs, which are not considered as Ok for most vegetarians.
I believe that I am not the only one who eat a vegan food here, so I will
be very grateful for the answer which will contribute to all
vegans/vegetarians here, on how to get an information that the food is
vegan? Thank you so much for your kind assistance.

Hi Romain,
I haven't met you in person but you have been very helpful to me and my
team on countless occasion.
I am really sad to hear this news. I am not in Capetown, I would have love
to meet you. Members of Wikimedia User Group, Shola and Sam are in
Capetown and may reach out to you.
Regards,
Isaac

Sad news indeed! So sorry to read this and I can at least say that I am
only grateful for your thoughtful help and clear explanations at Wikimedia
events I have attended in the past.

Hi there,
just a small reminder: Tomorrow, we'll have the Follow-Up Day for
conversations we had at the previous Wikimedia Conference. Anyone is
welcome to join. We will be in the suite 3204 (that's in the 32nd floor,
just take the elevator).
We will cover three topics:
* 9 to 10:30: Future of the Wikimedia Conference (new format, different
audience, upcoming challenges & consequences)
* 10:30 to 13:00: Volunteer Support: Growing and diversifying your
communities through minority language editing
* 13:30 to 15:00: Communications: Global campaigning: (explore
opportunities, ideas, and capacities for internationally coordinated comms
campaigns)

I don't think there is a standard presentation template for Wikimania. But
maybe the WMF or local team have templates that presenters can use?

Hi all,
We, myself plus cc-ed, are looking forward to seeing and meeting many
of you in Wikimania starting in some hours. While many meetings and
conversations will organically happen during the coming days, I'd like
to bring your attention to two more formal opportunities for us to
interact with you. We do ask you [1] to join us if you're interested.
* Hackathon days: Research has a focus area. You can read more about
it at https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Hackathon/Research. The
focus area is NOT going to be focused on technical research and
development only. We are especially hoping to hear from you, as
volunteers and staff of chapters and Wikimedia affiliates, about the
challenges you're facing and work with you to see if we can turn them
to research questions. You do not need, at all, to know about research
to talk with us about the challenges you see ahead of you and/or us as
a Movement.
* The State of Research in Knowledge Gaps [2] on Saturday, July 21,
10:30-11:30. This will be a workshop where we give you an overview of
the problems related to Knowledge Gaps that we can solve today, and
those that are ahead of us. We will specifically talk about content
gaps, readership needs and gaps, and editor diversity.
If you want to talk with us on a more 1:1 basis and these time-slots
won't work for you: no worries, just send me an email and we will do
our best to find a common time with you.
Looking forward to learning with you and from you.
Best,
Leila
