Hi all,
We just launched [[WM:Techblog]] <https://techblog.wikimedia.org/>, a new
place to share stories from the Wikimedia technical community with the
world. Yay!
We created this venue to provide a central place for people to share
stories about the technical work that they do— like:
-
How to run a top ten website that is all Open Source?
-
How do we make our codebase more modular and future-proof?
-
How do we come together to work on technical projects?
-
How to develop a product for many different languages?
-
How do new tools and bots help run Wikimedia projects?
-
What can we learn from data science and research?
-
And, much more…
Check out these posts for examples:

ABSTRACT
=========
Adaptive and personalized systems have become pervasive technologies which are gradually playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives.
Indeed, we are now used to interact every day with algorithms that help us in several scenarios, ranging from services that suggest us music to be listened to or movies to be watched, to personal assistants able to proactively support us in complex decision-making tasks.
As the importance of such technologies in our everyday lives grows, it is fundamental that the internal mechanisms that guide these algorithms are as clear as possible. It is not by chance that the recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) emphasized the users' right to explanation when people face machine learning-based (or ñ more in general - artificial intelligence-based) systems. Unfortunately,
the current research tends to go in the opposite direction, since most of the approaches try to maximize the effectiveness of the personalization strategy (e.g., recommendation accuracy) at the expense of the explainability and the transparency of the model.
The main research questions which arise from this scenario is simple and straightforward: how can we deal with such a dichotomy between the need for effective adaptive systems and the right to transparency and interpretability?
Several research lines are triggered by this question: building scrutable user models and transparent algorithms, analyzing the impact of opaque algorithms on final users, studying the role of explanation strategies, investigating how to provide users with more control in the personalization and adaptation problems.
The workshop aims to provide a forum for discussing such problems, challenges and innovative re-search approaches in the area, by investigating the role of transparency and explainability on the re-cent methodologies for building user models or for developing personalized and adaptive systems.

Dear Wikimedians,
The call for proposals for grants to organise WikiCite satellite events
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite> to be held first half of 2020 is now
open.
WikiCite is an initiative to develop open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge. Since 2016, there has been an
annual conference in support of that goal. In 2020, this will become a
series of independently organised Satellite events around the world.
The steering committee, with the financial support of the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation and the Wikimedia Foundation, are offering grants to support
WikiCite Satellite events in three categories for events happening in the first
half of 2020:
1.
*International events in association with professional conferences *[Maximum
$10k each, Application deadline 1 February] (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#1:_International_events_in_associa…>
)
2.
Local workshops and meetups [Maximum $2k each, Open until funds are
allocated] (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#2:_Local_workshops_and_meetups>
)
3.
Events seeking non-financial support (details
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite#3:_Events_seeking_non-financial_su…>
)
Submissions are especially encouraged if they are related to marginalised
knowledge and/or hosted at a location in the global South.
To read the detailed criteria for each of these categories, and to apply
for a WikiCite Satellite event grant, visit:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite
Sincerely and on behalf of the steering committee
<http://wikicite/administration#Coordination>,
Liam Wyatt / Wittylama
WikiCite program manager [WMF Contractor]
Note: If you wish to host an event in support of WikiCite’s aims, but do
not require any support, you do not need to apply for ‘permission’. Please
add your event to the ongoing calendar of events
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/media>.
Hi,
Total Wikidata beginner here. I found that Metropolitan France doesn't
have population information: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q212429
On the other hand, Wikipedia has it, including official source for it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_France
My question is:
- Is there any way to flag some information to be corrected, or
communicate the need for improvement? For example OpenStreetMap has a
bug feature for this.
- How can I add this value myself? What do I need to do exactly?

Hello all,
This is an important announcement for all the tool builders and maintainers
who access Wikidata’s data by *querying Labs database replicas directly*.
In April 2019, the Wikidata development team started a heavy redesign of an
important table of the database, wb_terms. Over the years, this table has
become too big, causing various issues. That’s why we decided to split it
into several smaller tables. For more context, you can have a look at
previous announcements: April 2019
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikidata/2019-April/012987.html>, May
2019 <https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikidata/2019-May/013052.html>.
We encountered a lot of unexpected issues on the road which required us to
postpone the timeline, but the final steps of the migration are now
happening. We published a blog post
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/195/coming_to_terms_with_…>
to explain in more detail what we did and why it was important to optimize
the database structure.
Here’s an overview of what happened, what are the next steps and how you
can update your code:
- The new structure is now in place on Labs. You can read more details
on this documentation page
<https://doc.wikimedia.org/mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/master/php/md_docs_…>
- Wikidata is entirely reading from and writing to the new tables since
March 18th, which means the existing wb_terms table is *not updated
anymore*
- This means that any tools that are still reading from wb_terms and
updating Wikidata based on its content have to be updated as soon as
possible
- In order to fully deprecate the table and make it clear that it is
outdated, the wb_terms will be renamed to wb_terms_no_longer_updated on
Monday, *March 30th*. Tools still querying this table at that date will
certainly encounter errors.
- To get an overview on how to update your queries, you can have a look
at these examples <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221767>
If you have questions or encounter any issues, please write on this
Phabricator ticket <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T208425> or write me
an email.
We apologize for the delay and the lack of recent updates regarding this
change.
Cheers,

To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hoi,
Obviously with a pandemic people die including notable people. As I am used
to do, I have a query, a Listeria list that will update the latest
information based on what we know in Wikidata.
Given that it is not restricted to any one Wikipedia, we will know the
notable dead from any and all Wikipedias.
It is easy enough to have this list on your Wikipedia..
Thanks,
GerardM

A questions for those who have created Wikibase installations
When creating a new Wikibase: How do you create Properties en masse - especially useful if you want to implement all the properties of a partner project?
Is there a way to do that with QuickStatements?

1. Call for Papers - Industry Track
*******************************************
The industry track seeks to present the state of adoption of semantic technologies in industrial applications, and intends to facilitate a discussion about what current industry challenges can be addressed with semantic technologies. These technologies may be used in specific industries (e.g., media, financials, telecommunications, healthcare, life sciences, government, intelligence, public sector, industrial production etc.) and in different application areas (e.g., business intelligence, smart cities, digital twin, analytics, search, content management, knowledge management, recommendation systems, data integration, automotive etc.).
The industry track aims to facilitate the exchange between Semantic Web researchers and industrial solution developers to bridge between state-of-the-art research and its application in industrial scenarios. We welcome contributions about:
* Success stories of adoption of semantic technologies and knowledge graphs in real-world environments, especially by emphasizing how these technologies have succeeded in creating value as well as key factors for the success of the adoption in a large-scale organization.
* Experiences about challenges that are encountered in an industry setting when adopting a solution based on semantic technologies.
* Contributions about current challenges in industrial fields which should be tackled by semantic technologies, emphasizing solution approaches and existing issues that are currently only insufficiently addressed by Semantic Web research.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Development and application of semantic technologies and knowledge graphs for specific industries (automotive, financial, healthcare and life sciences, energy industry, industry 4.0, public sector etc.)
* Real-world applications of semantic technologies for enabling FAIR (meta) data
* Approaches to bridge between domain experts and semantic technology experts
* Successful application domains: Knowledge management, data integration, data sharing, search, Business Intelligence, data analytics, open data, enterprise data management etc.
* Industrial trends related to the usage of Linked Data, Open Data and Semantic Web technologies
* Financial and strategic investments in semantic technologies
* Machine Learning approaches in connection with the Semantic Web (e.g. ML for knowledge graph completion or ontology matching, learning of knowledge graph and entity embeddings, question answering, etc)
