Hi everyone,
Wearing the soweego project lead hat, I'm pleased to announce that the
Wikimedia Foundation has approved the *soweego 1.1* proposal:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Hjfocs/soweego_1.1
The main goal is to put together different machine learning algorithms
and get the highest-quality links between Wikidata and large external
catalogs.
Stay tuned for more rock'n'roll at:
https://github.com/Wikidata/soweego
And while you're there, why don't you give a star?
Cheers,
Marco
Hello all,
As you know, it is possible to add tags in the edit summaries (eg "mobile
edit"), especially for edits made by tools (eg "openrefine"). These tags
are used to more easily find specific edits and monitor the entering data,
for example on the Recent Changes where one can filter all edits made via
the VisualEditor, or all edits that remove a sitelink.
So far, tool builders had to use hacky ways to make their tools
automatically add the tag to the edit summaries. In order to improve this
process, we started adding a tags parameter to a bunch of APIs, to allow
the developers to integrate the tags directly in their API actions. Here's
the list of impacted APIs:
- wbeditentity
- wbsetaliases
- wbsetdescription
- wbsetlabel
- wbsetsitelink
- wbcreateclaim
- wbremoveclaims
- wbremovequalifiers
- wbremovereferences
- wbsetclaim
- wbsetclaimvalue
- wbsetqualifier
- wbsetreference
This change has already been deployed, so you can start using the new tags
parameter right away.
You can find more information about tags and how to create some new ones on
mw:Help:Tags <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Tags> (this page would
probably need some love, feel free to improve it). If you encounter any
issue, feel free to let a comment in the related ticket
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T229917>.
Cheers,

Hi everyone :)
More than 7 years ago we started the development of Wikidata. We
started out with the main goal of building a central data store for
Wikipedia. Very quickly we expanded to also covering the other
Wikimedia projects. Then came the interest from people outside
Wikimedia to use Wikidata’s data to build their own apps, websites,
visualisations and more. And last year we witnessed a significant
interest in Wikibase, the software behind Wikidata. This means our
work has expanded very significantly from what we started out with. We
noticed that more and more people need clarity and certainty about
where Wikidata and Wikibase are going. Because of this WMDE and WMF
started discussing this more deeply and wrote down a lot of the things
we have been talking about in the Wikidata and Wikibase communities
over the last years.
The result of these conversations include one product vision paper and
three product strategy papers that we are publishing today:
* Vision: This paper gives a high-level overview of where we’d like to
see Wikidata and Wikibase evolve and grow, based on the work of the
past 7 years and many conversations with community members, movement
partners, and other stakeholders.
* Wikidata for Wikimedia projects: This paper dives deeper into how we
see Wikidata developing in the context of the Wikimedia projects and
how it can better support the projects.
* Wikidata as a platform: This paper explores the value of Wikidata as
a source of data for others outside Wikimedia to build upon.
* Wikibase Ecosystem: This paper goes deeper into the idea of the
Wikibase Ecosystem, a network of Wikibase instances which share data
and other capacities.
I would love for you to read these papers now and give your feedback.
We are collecting feedback until the end of October and will then
integrate it as appropriate into a second iteration of the papers.
The papers are published at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Strategy/2019. Please leave
your feedback and questions on the associated talk page.
I am looking forward to reading your input.
Cheers

Hello everyone,
We are looking for a senior full-stack developer to work with us as a
contractor on Scribe.
Scribe is a Wikimedia Foundation funded software and research project. We
are building a tool to support newcomer Wikipedia editors in creating new
articles in under-resourced languages (e.g. Arabic, Hindi). The project is
open-source and will be integrated on low-resource Wikipedias so you will
be working on a great cause of making knowledge accessible to everyone.
Plus your work will have great visibility and impact on the community.
*You:*
We are looking for a senior software engineer contractor to realize the
Scribe project in a part-time position for 9 months starting on the 14th of
October.
You will work remotely with us. We are looking for someone with *3+ years
of experience in Full-stack development and community-focused applications*.
*Your future team:*
The project leads are Lucie and Hady, researchers in Computer Science. So
you will be part of our three-person team and able to influence the project
itself.
Lucie is a PhD researcher at the University of Southampton and TIB
Hannover. She previously worked at Wikimedia Germany. Hady holds a PhD in
Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning and currently works as a
researcher in Naver Labs Europe. We live in France and Germany/UK
respectively, so we are used to working remotely and effective
communication.
*How to apply: *
*Make sure to read the full job description here:*
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scribe/Job
Then drop us an email (scribe.wikimedia(a)gmail.com) showing your interest in
the project with your *CV* and *portfolio attached*.
We also appreciate *any other kind of information in any format* that shows
your relevant experience, creativity and problem-solving skills.
Note: Interviews will be scheduled on a first come first served basis until
the position gets filled, so please consider to submit your profile as soon
as possible.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Lucie-Aimée Kaffee and Hady Elsahar

The Technical Advice IRC Meeting (TAIM) is a weekly support event for
volunteer developers. Every Wednesday, two full-time developers are
available to help you with all your questions about MediaWiki, gadgets,
tools and more! This can be anything from "how to get started" over "who
would be the best contact for X" to specific questions on your project.
If you know already what you would like to discuss or ask, please add your
topic to the next meeting:

Dear Sir,
I thank you for your answer. I will do that. I just ask if you can develop a tool that turns a Wikidata statement in red if it does not correspond to the schemas of the classes of the Wikidata item related to it. I also ask if you accept to coauthor a paper entitled "Using ShEx to assess Wikidata's biomedical statements" and to publish it in ISDA 2019 conference (ERA C Class).

Yes, please do. I have been working on ShEx for other domains. It's a
fairly new effort (great work by the team, IMO), and the more people
adopt this additional way of data validation the better.

Hi, do you like citation networks? Already 51% of all citations are
available available for innovative new uses. Join me in asking the
American Chemical Society to join the Initiative for Open Citations
too. SpringerNature, the RSC and many others already did.
