Hi,
I'm a longtime OSM contributor. I like the idea of Wikidata and what I'm
really interested in is a sort of bridge between both projects.
Would somebody be interested in writing a game like application, which
would invoke JOSM Remote Control (JOSM RC) at the coordinates in the
wikidata item and
wikidata=Q....
in the clipboard?
That would make it easier to add such tags to the OSM objects.

I'd like to once more draw your attention to ViziData [1]. The project
has matured a bit since I first brought it up here a few months ago.
Most notably there is now an underlying tile map providing some
orientation better integration and interaction between map and
timeline and the possibility to list items aggregated in a map cell.
I created an overview page [2] for the Wikidata Visualization
Challenge, which can aid as quick reference for usage of the
application (although it is pretty cluttered). The version linked on
that page is my submission to the challenge and already outdated
though, the most up to date version should usually be found on the
link in this mail [1].
There are only 2 new datasets, one is all locations that have a
statement about their populations, however that needs some more work
and fine tuning. The other is any item that has a coordinate location
statement, filterable by the number of interwiki links. It shows a
pretty good coverage of the world, bring some patience though because
the 60mb json can take some time depending on the connection. Also,
slower hardware might get a bit exhausted going through the ~2.1
Million items.
I guess one can imagine various use cases for the application. For
instance, here is the people who died in the Netherlands in 2015 in
Vizidata [3]. Be aware however, that those haven't necessarily been
Dutch and also it doesn't include Dutch people who died somewhere
else. Comparing with Gerards list [4] there seem to be quite some
people missing. That's mainly because items that don't have both a
date of death and a place of death statement are dropped from the
datasets. Maybe it would be an option to include country of
citizenship as a fallback but it could lead to slightly incorrect
representation of the data.
I hope this tool can provide some interesting insights and help to
illustrate where there is most room for improvements in our data base.
Feel free to comment if you have questions or proposals, or maybe an
idea for a dataset that you would like to see in ViziData.

Hoi,
When we are to assess the quality of Wikidata, there are a few criteria we
need to assess.
- accuracy
- bias
- timeliness
- completeness
Arguably Wikidata needs to improve a lot on all four points.Whatever
approach we take all four criteria are essential. Making Wikidata more
complete is done by adding data we do not have from sources that are
reliable enough. Timeliness needs attention from people as well. Increased
accuracy can be achieved by comparing our data with the data from others
and researching the differences. Bias.. do not know what to suggest except
for making our data more complete, timely and accurate.
We do not need to wait for anything. We certainly should not insist on
sources for each statement as this will not bring us anything re the four
criteria.
The reason for this post is that our priorities are flawed because of
Wikipedia think. Wikidata may be used on Wikipedia and it makes sense when
Wikidata data fulfils the four criteria mentioned above,,
Please discuss this and consider the merits of the argument.
Thanks,
GerardM

If you look at the Baddesley Clinton entry on Wikipaedia,
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baddesley_Clinton) you will see that in
the right hand box, Owner: National Trust. If you look at the
Wikkidata entry (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4386885) that
information is not present.
Conversely, look at Packwood House
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packwood_House) and see that
corresponding Wikidata page has a statement of 'Owned by the National
Trust'. (https://www.wikidataorg/wiki/Q7123054).
There are many, many examples.
I have escalated my emails to both Historic England and the National
Trust to get their data in a useable form. Apropos of which, the
WayBackWhen site is particularly interesting :-)

Thanks all. My first paid computing job was to write a database system
(1984) and I have been involved ever since. been a while since I
played with really big data (most I have played with recently has been
the Postcodes issue) but am looking forward to making even a slight
improvement for Wiki.

Hey folks :)
The rollout of arbitrary access on Dutch Wikipedia and French
Wikisource seems to be going well so we're going to continue the
rollout. The next projects will be:
* 18. May: Farsi Wikipedia, English Wikivoyage, Hebrew Wikipedia
* 1. June: Italian Wikipedia, all remaining Wikisource
Cheers

From

get:
I 9,159II 337,560II* 21,405 but there is little information: The
unique ID, grade, date listed, date altered (if any) and a najme that
can be "20 AND 20A" with no road.These have Easting/Northing which I
have converted to lat/long.
I am chasing this up to try and get better names and addresses.
Markus Krötzsch wrote:> I am afraid that the data you are looking for

I noticed several items that have 'National Trust (with link) in the
text but not as an attribute in Wikidata.
I suppose there are no simple tools to identify and correct these?
I am chasing the National Trust for their data. I'll keep the list
posted if I get some :-)
Thank you all for your time.

Hoi,
I am giving notice that I will no longer maintain the people who are known
to have died on Wikidata. There are a few reasons:
- I do not have the same amount of time I used to have
- My time is better spend on other things. Linking people through
associations is more relevant
- I am sick and tired of the procrastination on bringing in information
from DBpedia
I have been indicating the need for importing data from DBpedia for a long
time and, there are always reasons why people think it is fine to wait even
longer until their pet project is ready. It implies that they assume that
everything will remain the same in the mean time. I refuse to accept that
attitude and that is why I will stop adding more dates of death as a
regular practice.
This does not mean that the data is not there, it does not mean that
Wikidata cannot have it. It means that we import from sources that are
known to be as trustworthy as Wikipedia. After all DBpedia data is based on
Wikipedia.
I will have more fun doing other things.
Thanks,
GerardM
Hoi,
An argument rages about the significance of the English WIkipedia using
Wikidata for person data, things like date of death.
DBpedia does a better job than Wikidata does and it does it because they
not only use dumps to update their information but they also use
information from RSS. Therefore they do a better job than volunteers like
myself at Wikidata do.
In my blogpost [1] I argue for cooperation. My point is very much that
increasingly I find I do no longer have the time to maintain the data for
people who died in 2014 or 2015. I have done that the last two years..
I desperately want to do other things with Wikidata, things that are more
relevant. PLEASE consider cooperating with the DBpedia people. They are
part of our ecosystem, they want to share and they want to make their data
available with our license.
Thanks,
GerardM

I apologise in advance for asking this in what seems a Technical List,
but @pigsonthewing tells me I can.
I want to extract all National Trust names, co-ordinates and the first
part of the description from wiki.
Having spent a day working through the API, I still cannot see how to
do this aside from scraping.
I am sure I am missing something very simple, so if anyone would
kindly email me, I would be grateful

Hey folks :)
We hit another huge milestone \o/
English Wikipedia has decided that they'll remove their persondata in
favor of Wikidata.
