Hi all,
The Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation has officially started 2 new
collaborations to work with us as part of the Addressing Knowledge Gaps
program [1]. We are thankful to them for agreeing to spend their time and
expertise on these projects in the coming 5 months.
Ai-jou (Aiko) Chou started as a contractor with the Research team on
February 1st. Based in Taiwan, she will be working on improving the Image
Recommendation algorithm [2], to find good images for unillustrated
Wikipedia articles, and support its productization. She will additionally
work on longer-term projects related to image recommendations, such as the
development of image classifiers trained on Commons categories [3].
Marc Miquel started as a contractor with the Research team on January 26th.
He will be working on the taxonomy of knowledge gaps [4], specifically in
developing metrics for gaps related to content (gender, geography, etc.)
[5]. Marc brings extensive experience in this space from his work on the
Cultural Diversity Observatory [6].
We aim to keep the research documentation for these projects in the
corresponding research pages on meta [3,5]. Miriam Redi and I will act as
the point of contact for these projects in the Wikimedia Foundation. Please
feel free to reach out to us if you have comments or questions about the
project (directly, if it cannot be shared publicly) .
Best,
Miriam and Martin
