Hello world! My name is Hal Triedman, and I’m a senior privacy engineer at WMF. I work to make data that WMF releases about reading, editing, and other on-wiki behavior safer, more granular, and more accessible to the world using differential privacy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_privacy>. Today I’m reaching out to share that WMF has released almost 8 years (from 1 July 2015 to present) of privatized pageview data <https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/06/21/new-dataset-uncovers-wikipedia-browsi…>, partitioned by country, project, and page. This data is significantly more granular than other datasets we release, and should help researchers to disambiguate both long- and short-term trends within languages on a country-by-country basis — several <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T207171> long-standing requests <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T267283> from Wikimedia communities. Due to various technical factors, there are three distinct datasets: - 1 July 2015 – 8 Feb 2017 <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page_his…> / README <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page_his…> (publishing threshold [1]: 3,500 pageviews) - 9 Feb 2017 – 5 Feb 2023 <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page_his…> / README <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page_his…> (publishing threshold: 450 pageviews) - 6 Feb 2023 – present <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page/> / README <https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/country_project_page/00_…> (publishing threshold: 90 pageviews) API access to this data should be coming in the next few months. In the interim, I’ve built an example python notebook <https://public-paws.wmcloud.org/67457802/private_pageview_data_access.ipynb> illustrating how one might access the data in its current csv format, as well as several different kinds of simple analyses that can be done with it. Publishing a data set with citation (and map) metrics for all wikis

As part of Wikimedia Germany's work around reference reuse, we wrote a tool which processes the HTML dumps of all articles and produces detailed information about how Cite references (and Kartographer maps) are used on each page. I'm writing this list for advice on how to publish the results so that the data can be easily discovered and consumed by researchers. Currently, the data is contained in 3,100 JSON and NDJSON files hosted on a Wikimedia Cloud VPS server, with a total size of 3.4GB. The outputs can be split or merged into whatever form will make them more useable. Digital and computational demography is a growing interdisciplinary field that tackles fundamental questions across all domains of demographic research by combining the methods and perspectives of computational sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and statistics. The field has emerged in parallel with rapid technological improvements in computing, the spread of Internet and mobile technologies, and the increased digitalization of people's lives. Our group brings together methodologists (from areas like statistics, computer science or formal demography) with experts in various areas of the social sciences in order to foster cross-pollination of ideas, to advance methods and theories of population research, and to address pressing scientific and societal questions. Candidates who can enrich or complement projects in any Research Area of the Lab of Migration and Mobility or of the Lab of Population Dynamics and Sustainable Well-Being will be considered. Across all profiles, ability and willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams in order to conduct cutting-edge research that advances our understanding of population processes is key. Examples of themes that we are interested in strengthening include (but are not limited to): * The use of advanced statistical analysis, machine learning or causal inference for estimating, understanding and forecasting demographic outcomes, at the individual and aggregate levels; * The assessment of the relationships between climate change, population dynamics and individual behaviors, including the impact of climate change on demographic and health indicators; * The assessment of the impact of technological transformations, including the digitalization of life, on social inequalities, time use, and well-being; * Modeling and understanding migration flows, including high-skilled migration and migration of scientists. Generation gap widens between admins and other editors on the English Wikipedia.

Hi, Thirteen years after I wrote about the emergence of a Wikigeneration gap between Wikipedia's admins and its editors, I have revisited the topic, recalculated the gap and published a new signpost article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2023-08-15/Speci… To I expect few people's surprise, the admin cadre is still overwhelmingly drawn from editors who started editing in Wikipedia's exponential growth phase (2001-2007), Half from 2003-2005. Research on Wikipedia as a consumer health information resource

This work started in 2021 and is one of the first studies to intentionally explore user experiences of Wikipedia as a health information resource.
