I'm just a lurker here, so I don't know if the toolserver machine is running
a recent enough MySQL, but there is a table type called the "federated"
table, see
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/federated-use.html
For the most part, this makes it possible to use a remote table that you
have access to in SQL commands in the same way one might normally use a
local one.
