We have been completly overrun by registrations for the developer meet-up in
Berlin. That’s exhilarating, but forces on me the sad duty to tell you: we are
out of room, we are closing registration early.
So: if you have not yet send a registration mail, you will not be able to attend!
Sorry. We may even have to reject some registrations we have already received.
There’s some good news too, though: anyone interested my join us at the c-base
for the party on saturday March 4., starting 8pm. The developers will be there
and people from the chapter and board meeting will also come. This will be a
good opportunity for getting to know Wikimedians from all over the world.
Regards,
Daniel
When I asked in what way, if any, the Swedish chapter could help
the toolserver project, the short answer I got was that a new
server would cost 8000 euro and a year's salary for an admin would
cost even more. If we had 8000 euro to spend (we don't) and
nobody asked us what we use the money for, maybe we could get away
with that. But when we ask people for donations, they like to
know what it's good for. So what is the toolserver good for,
really? I think I know this, but how can I explain it to others?
The annual report (Tätigkeitsbericht) for 2007 for Wikimedia
Deutschland mentions that 60,000 euro was used to double squid
capacity and 10,000 euro was used for the toolserver cluster.
The report for 2008 should be due soon, I guess.
I think it could be useful if the toolserver project could find a
way to explain its current capacity, what kind of services this
capacity is used for, and how much this capacity could be
increased by a certain donation. We could make a little folder or
poster that explains this, and distribute among our fans.
The easiest would perhaps be to count the HTTP requests. How many
requests (or page views) does the toolserver receive per year,
day, or second? How are they distributed over the various
services? Is it possible to count how many unique visitors (IP
addresses) each service has? Divided by language or referer
language of Wikipedia? Could the toolserver produce something
similar to Domas' hourly visitor statistics for Wikipedia?
There's already http://toolserver.org/%7Einteriot/cgi-bin/tstoc
where the right-most column indicates the number of individual IP
adresses in the last 7 days. Is there a log of these data? It
must be wrong (surely?) that only 8 tools had any accesses this
week. It could be correct that "21933 unique IP's visited the
toolserver this week", but that number sounds rather low.
The toolserver hopefully spends far more processor cycles for each
HTTP request than a squid cache. But just how many more? Every
server has an economic life of maybe 3 years, while its purchasing
price is written off, and it serves a number of HTTP requests in
that time. So what is the hardware (and hosting) cost of each
request?
Of course, HTTP requests is not everything. Is there a way we
could measure other uses of the toolserver?
Getting back to my favorite: The geographic applications. Are the
map tiles for the WikiMiniAtlas served from the toolserver? How
much power does this currently use for the Swedish Wikipedia? What
if the maps were shown inline for every visitor, instead of as a
pop-up that very few people click on? How much extra would that
cost? Could such a service still run on the toolserver, or would
it need to be moved to the servers in Florida?

hi,
we're now (again) looking for new admins. i originally posted this about a
year ago, but we ended up not being able to add new admins then, so nothing
happened. if you applied then, please feel free to re-apply.
we are looking for someone with experience using the following in a production
environment:
+ General Unix to an expert level (say, 7-10 years experience at least)
+ Solaris
+ general administration
+ patch management
+ live upgrade
+ ZFS
+ jumpstart
+ MySQL
+ Debian Linux
people without this experience may be considered, if you're willing to put in
the effort to get up to speed quickly.
knowledge of the following would be helpful:
+ C and/or C++ programming language
+ PHP
+ Veritas
+ Sun Java System Web Server
+ Zeus Web Server
+ Apache
+ LDAP (Sun DSEE)
some tasks the new admin might start with:
+ designing and implementing a monitoring system to provide current and
historical statistics about the cluster, warning about problems, etc.
+ implementing a network install (jumpstart) framework to enable
(re)installation of hosts easily, with proper post-install setup.
it would be particularly nice to have another 'on-call' admin besides myself,
for when there are urgent problems with the cluster and no one is around.
you should either be a well-known and trusted member of the community, or else
have some kind of professional background (either academic or commercial). we
might require references for the latter, depending on the situation. you will
be required to provide the Wikimedia office with proof of your identity.
if you're interested, please mail me privately (not the list), including some
information about yourself and details of your relevant background/experience,
and an estimate of how much time you might be able to donate. you may include
a CV if you wish.

hi,
we are now backing up user databases (u_%) on all three database servers. this
means the data will be restored if the server fails, or we move to another
server. additionally, the backups are now copied to an off-site server, making
data loss less likely.
please take a moment to look at your user databases, and drop any that you no
longer need; these databases use a lot of space both on the SQL servers, and on
the backup server.

The meet-up[1] is drawing close now: between April 3. and 5. we meet at the
c-base[2] in Berlin to discuss MediaWiki development, extensions, toolserver
projects, wiki research, etc. Registration[3] is open until March 20 (required
even if you already pre-registered).
The schedule[4] is slowly becomming clear now: On Friday, we'll start at noon
with a who-is-who-and-does-what session and in the evening there will be an
opportunity to get to know Berlin a bit. On Saturday we have all day for
presentations and discussions, and in the evening we will have a party together
with all the folks from the chapter and board meetings. On Sunday there will be
a wrap-up session and a big lunch for everyone.
We have also organized affordable accommodation: we have reserved rooms in the
Apartmenthaus am Potsdamer Platz[5]. Staying there is a recommended way of
getting to know your fellow Wikimedians!
I'm happy that so many of you have shown interest, and I'm sure we'll have a
great time in Berlin!
Regards,
Daniel

Hello,
I check today some of my PHP script and i see problems with quotes.
http://toolserver.org/~bayo/intercat.php?formCat1='&formCat2=&formCat3=&formCat4=&form=
<http://toolserver.org/%7Ebayo/intercat.php?formCat1=%27&formCat2=&formCat3=…>
You can click into "Afficher", thats funny :-)
Is the "magic quote" is activated, and can we remove it? I dont think
last time i check, we use it. That why i request you before updating my
scripts.
I see nothing "magic" on that, it's not an help, imho it only create bad
code; hidding explicite quotes where it's need; editing strings we dont
request; or need extra code to support both enabled/disabled "magic quote".
If we can't disable it for the server, is there a way to unactive it per
scripts or per account? Sure, I also can remove quotes from
PRE/POST/COOKIE/SESSION with hands, but i dont like that.
Thanks a lot for your help.

hi,
wolfsbane and nightshade were both rebooted this morning. i downgraded
nightshade's kernel to the current Debian kernel, to see if this fixes the
issue we've been having.

Hello all,
the import of cluster 3 on yarrow is done. So we have now (more or less) live
data of all 3 cluster again.
Have fun with it :)
Sincerly,
DaB.

Now that sql-s1 is on a new box, my queries are creating a replag that
never happened before. For instance, I run a query that creates an
ENGINE=MEMORY table based on a join with enwiki_p.pagelinks and another
MEMORY-based table, typically takes 10-15 minutes.
I ran this
query daily for 1-2 months before the switch, and it never affected
replag. Now, replag goes up as soon as the join begins.
(Oh, and I call SET SESSION TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED)
Is anyone else seeing problems like this? Or have an idea how to fix/work around the bug?
