Browsing around among the Google Summer of Code projects, I noticed
that a lot of the links to "ideas" pages pointed to MediaWiki
installations -- many sites even used MW as their only CMS. I decided
to do a quick count of the wiki engines and CMS used, which might be
interesting to others as well -- SoC is a valuable sample as these are
many of the leading open source projects.
http://code.google.com/soc/
28 static pages or unidentified (usually custom) CMS
22 MediaWiki installations (Beagle, Blender, Creative Commons,
Etherboot, FFMpeg, Inkscape, Jabber, Mars Space Flight Facility,
Moodle, MythTV, One Laptop Per Child, OpenOffice.org, OpenSolaris,
OpenSUSE, ReactOS, NASA World Wind, Mono, Mozilla, Wikimedia,
wxWindows, Xiph, XMMS)
14 MoinMoin wikis
8 Drupal installations (CMS with some wiki-like elements)
5 TRAC installations (very cool integrated bugtracking/wiki/everything)
3 TWikis (wiki.java.net only counted once)
2 TikiWikis
2 UseMod (keep up the good fight!)
2 Confluence "enterprise wikis"
1 unidentified bugtracking system
1 unidentified blog engine
1 JotSpot wiki (evil proprietary engine! ;-))
1 EditMe wiki
1 PHPWiki
1 "Wicked" wiki
1 Joomla CMS
1 Plone CMS
1 WikkaWiki
1 DocuWiki
1 XWiki
1 unidentified wiki
I found it funny that quite a few of the MediaWikis use CamelCase
though they don't have to. This is often because they were migrated
from other wiki engines.
I was quite surprised by how well MoinMoin is doing, and how poorly
TWiki. If even the geeks don't like TWiki anymore, I guess it's dying.
Of course MW's showing is excellent - and a bit scary. I will be very
happy when all these typically English-only wikis become fully capable
of accepting multilingual content -- this could benefit _huge_ numbers
of people outside the Wikimedia community, where we achieve
multilingualism through a complex multi-database setup that most sites
will not care to replicate.

Hello,
I've come across a problem when upgrading my wiki from 1.5.4...
Not having commandline php on this machine I resorted to running the web-based
setup script again however, when updating the database, the following error
appears:
-----------------------
PHP 5.0.5-pl3-gentoo installed
PHP server API is apache2handler; ok, using pretty URLs (index.php/Page_Title)
Have XML / Latin1-UTF-8 conversion support.
PHP is configured with no memory_limit.
Have zlib support; enabling output compression.
Neither Turck MMCache nor eAccelerator are installed, can't use object caching
functions
Found GNU diff3: /usr/bin/diff3.
Found ImageMagick: /usr/bin/convert; image thumbnailing will be enabled if you
enable uploads.
Found GD graphics library built-in.

Script URI path: /wiki

What can I do to fix this?
Thanks.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

Is it possible to make certain links in the sidebar show only if an
Administrator is logged in?
I've made a few SpecialPages that are only valid if someone other than a
regular user logs in and having a "Admin control" box in the sidebar would be
nicer than having to find the relevant entries in Special:Specialpages.

Is it normal for the collation of the page_title and page_touched
fields in the page table to be set to latin1_bin while there is no
collation set for any of the other fields?
I'm asking because it seems to be preventing me from using CONCAT()
in a mysql query on a custom special page (although it's very likely
that my limited knowledge of mysql is actually the problem ;)
i'm getting the following mysql error message:
#1267 - Illegal mix of collations (latin1_bin,IMPLICIT) and
(utf8_unicode_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation 'like'
thanks
I have the instructions for resetting the admin password for the wiki
admin user (not the db user), but given that the wiki admin name ended
up being apparently the "default" name, I thought I'd try the "default"
password first. But I don't know where to find it!
Thanks
Ken

Just curious, what do you see as the type of issues that exist with regards
to accepting multilingual content?

Hi Guys,
Need help with another problems I'm having. When
navigating through my Wiki I get the following URL style in all my pages
"index.php?title=Main_Page" . How do I ensure that the URL indicates
only "Main_Page". Like I see on wikipedia and other Wiki sites?
Thanks in advance,
AJ
For experimenting with wysiwyg editing,
I have put an extension (a true extension, no patch
of the mediawiki code required) on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FCKeditor
which allows semi-wysiwig editing of wiki pages using
the famous FCKeditor.

L.S.,
I'm currently trying to create a bot that can automatically
post forms to mediawiki. I've managed to do following:
* Log in to mediawiki.
* Get a page (using the Special:Export option).
Now I want to submit a page, but somehow that
doesn't work. Does anyone have experience with creating
a bot for mediawiki that can edit pages via http/forms?
Thanks in advance for your answers,
Hans Oesterholt-Dijkema
Due no doubt to a mistake on my part, I know find that the user name and
p/w I thought I'd specified for the wiki admin during setup weren't
actually what went through. There is an account called "wikiadmin", so
perhaps I somehow submitted the defaults.
In any case, could someone please explain, or direct me to instructions,
to change the wiki admin account name and password? I have full access
to both the server and the wiki DB. Surely someone has lost or forgotten
their password before :-)
Let's hope this is the last installation goof on my part,
Ken
