I just want to add a suggestion that I haven't seen really discussed, and that is the
idea of
supporting more diversity among male editors as a way of making an encyclopedia that
would be more inviting for potential female editors.
this is an interesting point, I think, Audrey, even the beginning of your paragraph as
standing by itself
it reminds of a quote I came across a few weeks ago that may actually be of interest
here:
<quote>
those who enjoy the benefits of democratic society bear the responsibility to develop the
capacity for
'critical freedom', which includes cultivating "the ability to see one's
own ways as strange and unfamiliar,
to stray from and take up a critical attitude towards them and so open culture to
question,
reinterpretation, negotiation, transformation and non-identity." (Tully 1995:206),
</quote>
this passage as a whole is from
Moira Gatens and Genevieve Lloyd: Collective imaginings. Spinoza, past and present. London
: Routledge,
1999, p. 140
and they are quoting from
James Tully: Strange multiplicity. Constitutionalism in an age of diversity. Cambridge :
Cambridge University
Press, 1995, p. 206
seeing this passage in the light of the point you are making, I guess, Audrey, brings me
to the conclusion
that James Tully's insight might indeed be interesting food for thought especially for
a project like WP that is
so hinged on "facts" - "factum", in Latin, meaning "something
made" -
and yes, anyone who helps others on and showing a relaxed critical attitude to their own
ways is simply
admirable, I think
thanks & cheers,
