In January 2018 the Education Team at the Wikimedia Foundation published a
report
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Education_Program_Survey_Report_Ja…>
based
on a survey that asked all of the Wikimedia & Education stakeholders for
input about our communications and branding. The research conducted last
year found that our communications materials and resources were not
reflecting the work of our large and active community of program leaders,
educators, students, policymakers, and many more.
We made an announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/education/2018-July/002026.html> in
July that the Education team would start making some initial revisions to
the Education <https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education> space on
Outreach Wiki. Including phasing out the current visual identity, archiving
outdated pages and information, developing new content that is relevant and
current, and improving overall usability.
The first step in this process was to decide on a new logo. In October, the
Education team invited community members to decide the new logo
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/voting_for_new_logo> designed
by the Communications team and select among the three other options
available. After a week-long process, a new logo
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Education.svg> was
selected for Wikimedia and Education. The Education team at the Foundation
will use the new logo selected by the community as the primary identity for
Education in the Wikimedia movement, where it will be used on Outreach and
on resources and presentations made by the team.
Following the guidelines by the Communications team, the community members
can localize the logo in the context of their Education program/movement.
- The logo must not be changed, no other fonts should be, neither the
shapes or texts should be shifted from the existing position.
- No new illustrations can be added to the logo or used as part of the
logo
- Illustrations can be used on materials/ apparel branded with the
Education logo.
- In terms of localizing the logo, refer to the Wikimedia Foundation
guidelines. Text must in black and in font Montserrat
Maria Cruz <https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:MCruz_(WMF)> has also
supported us by taking the new logo color and creating a color scheme that
we can use. The following colors are part of the color scheme:
*#00A7E2* *#DAD6D6* *#92BFB1* *#F4AC45* *#CA054D*Revision of Education on
Outreach
The research we did last year about the perception of our visual identity
and the usefulness of our online space was insightful and informative. It
is shaping the way we are revising the Education space on outreach. In
order to gather more information, and collect your opinions, we’re offering
another opportunity to share what you want to see in the revised Education
space on Outreach. You can share your opinion on the form linked here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScbMtZcOyoKJjP59F-hLm3c4AeSkCqK_pJ…>
*This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject
it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling,

.
Slack
Currently, Wikipedia + Education Facebook group is the only collaborative
social space for community members and educators to share their work and
learn from others. To bring these interaction/discussions to a more public
participation, The Wikimedia Education team wants to introduce a new Wikimedia
and Education Slack
<https://join.slack.com/t/wikimedia-education/shared_invite/enQtNDkwNzY3ODE0…>
workspace
developed specifically for Wikimedia Education. We hope to see you there.
Slack is currently being used by other actors in the Open space such as
Creative Commons. Many of you are probably taking part in conversations
there. We think having open conversations on certain topics ongoing in
Slack channels could be a great thing for the Education community, and we’d
like to try it.
Note: In case you don't want to join Slack, you can still be part of the
Education discussion on Facebook or Education mailing list.
You can find these updates in this month's newsletter
<https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/News>, along with many other
interesting articles!
all the best,
Nichole

Dear All,
I would like to inform you that I have asked for a rapid Grant and a
regular Grant, both related to promoting and distributing offline Wikipedia
(using the Kiwix program) in Senegal. One project will be bringing WikiMed
to health centers lacking internet access and the second project will be
bringing offline Wikipedia as well as other educational resources to
schools with very poor or no internet access.
Both of these projects include "training" sessions so that the future users
of offline Wikipedia will be able to benefit straight away from the huge
wealth of information contained in the encyclopedia which will henceforth
be at their disposal.
WikiMed project:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/GastelEtzwane/WikimedS…
Education project:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Offline_Wikipedia_in_Senegal…
Please have a look at these two proposals, and if you feel that they are
worth pursuing, please endorse the proposals. I welcome your comments and
remarks on the grant proposal pages.
Best regards
Gabriel Thullen

Project WikiMed :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/GastelEtzwane/WikimedS…
Project Education :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Offline_Wikipedia_in_Senegal…
Je vous remercie de regarder ces demandes, et si vous les jugez
intéressantes de les soutenir. Vos commentaires et remarques sont les
bienvenus sur la page de demande de Grant, en français ou en anglais.
Avec mes salutations les meilleures
Gabriel Thullen
Dear Wikimedia & Education community,
I’m so excited to welcome Melissa Guadalupe Huertas as the newest member of
the Education Team in the role of Education Program Officer. Melissa will
be supporting the team by developing resources and strategies that help
integrate the Wikimedia projects into classroom learning, specifically
focused on underrepresented communities.
Melissa in her own words:
Hola! I’m so excited to be joining you all in the Wikimedia Foundation! I
feel really honored to be part of an organization that is transforming the
world through its commitment to equitable access and production of
knowledge. I see many of my professional and personal values reflected in
the Wikimedia movement, particularly the importance of lifting up the
voices of underrepresented communities to achieve true education equity.
I’m really looking forward to working as the new Program Officer in the
Education Team!
I recently returned home to Peru after spending a year working towards my
MA at University College London where I explored the intersection of the
fields of education, gender equality, and international development. My
previous work experiences have involved managing diverse education and
development programs in Ecuador, Panama and Peru, both in urban and rural
communities. These experiences taught me a lot about the power of
collaboration and finding innovative ways to deliver quality education that
positively impacts the future of communities worldwide. This is basically
what motivated me to join this movement!
When I’m not working you can find me hiding behind a book (and every now
and then re-reading Harry Potter or The Sandman series) or doodling in my
sketchbook outdoors. I’m a big big fan of spontaneous day trips and
exploring the world, so if you have any tips on cities/islands/mountains I
should check out, do let me know. I look forward to connecting with you to
learn and work together!
Please join me in welcoming Melissa to the foundation!
All the best,
Nichole
