Dear All I've been asked by a civil servant at the Scottish Government to look into the ways that mediawiki literacy could be incorporated into Scottish secondary school work (12-18 years of age). This might be something like installing MediaWiki on the schools' national intranet, or doing something with Wikiversity or simply using Wikipedia within a particular project. When I discussed the project with the civil servant it was clear that the aim was not simply to provide MediaWiki skills training for students and teachers, but to make possible collaborative inter- and intra-school work, as well as raising and developing the digital citizenship of school teachers and students. That is really as far as I've got. One problem is that I don't actually work in schools. So I thought that a good place to start was this list, and to ask for help in identifying examples of any Wikimedia project work that either you've been involved in at school level, or that you know about. It would be great to get links to the actual work (if it's publicly available on Wikipedia for example), but it would also be good to get links to reflective blog posts on successes, failures, things to avoid etc. I can then collate and map these for further discussion with the government. I'm just at the start of the conversation, but I'll keep the list updated on any progress. With thanks in advance and best regards, Graeme. Wikimania Submission: Wiki-med

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to draw your attention to a submission I made re my Wiki-Med course at the Sackler school of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University. Cool talks about Wikipedia?

Another education article

Hi all, my recent "Ten ways educators can use Wikipedia" article has gone down so well that I've been asked for follow-up articles. The first one of these is out today as a guest post on the CILIP blog. CILIP is the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, so this is a way to reach a lot of the library community, including university librarians who support courses or deliver student inductions. WikiReaders - Can anyone give some advice please?

Hi everyone, at Wikimedia Argentina we are working with a potential new partner, to work in education. The institution gives school support to about 750 kids from 6 to 12 years old. However, they have huge needs of primary sources for consultation, when working on different school tasks and homework. One idea that we considered at Wikimedia Argentina was to provide WikiReaders: students could access them when at school support, and they could read Wikipedia in Spanish for school work, if they need to consult any topic. I wanted to know if anyone working on education programs has ever crafted a program that included the readers, and what was their experience. Can we install Wikipedia in Spanish? Is it useful for primary school research tasks? We can only buy it through Amazon<http://www.amazon.com/WikiReader-WR-01-Pocket-Wikipedia/dp/B002N5521W/>, or is there another channel to purchase these devices? Since it works offline, is it possible to update it every other time? The only information I found was in the device homepage<http://thewikireader.com/>, but I would be glad to read about a program that uses WikiReader somewhere else. Thanks in advance! (Announcement) LiAnna Davis to leave the Wikimedia Foundation

Hello everyone, More change is coming to the Wikipedia Education Program team. LiAnna Davis has let me know she will be leaving the Wikimedia Foundation. LiAnna has directed our team's communications since I hired her for the pilot program in the United States back in June 2010. Her last day will be March 14. While we'll miss LiAnna at the Wikimedia Foundation, she'll continue to be involved in the Wikipedia Education Program in the U.S. and Canada. She's joining Frank Schulenburg and Jami Mathewson at the Wiki Education Foundation, where she's excited about helping the U.S. program achieve the potential we all saw in it when we started it back in 2010. Over the next several week, I will be working with the team to reorganize the many tasks that LiAnna currently does for the program. We'll be reaching out to and meeting with various program leaders worldwide. We will keep you posted about the Wikipedia Education Program team. As you can see, there is a lot happening, so stay tuned for more information.
