Hoi, What you call a "simple" workaround is enough to drive people away. You only address one problem that I raised in an unsatisfactory way. There are many keyboard that do not have a character like the | The consequence is that all the functionality that requires this character is not available to many people. You are bound to suggest that there is a "simple" workaround for that as well.
At issue is that our current software while great, is not that great for a many people. Because you are one of the "haves" you defend what you have and ridicule what is necessary for those that do need make a much bigger effort in order to use our software.
The one thing you forget is, that MediaWiki is there to provide and create content. The argument is about does MediaWiki help or hinder creating content. The argument on the one hand is: "it does not work for many people"and on the other hand "it works for me". So please start writing content in Neapolitan, Yoruba, Nepali, Bengali ...

We need to change how we indicate italics and bold because the way it is implemented is incompatible with some natural languages.
They're incompatible, in a very minor way, with a somewhat uncommon grammatical construct, which occurs in exactly one natural language, spoken by comparatively few people - let's not exaggerate here. And the last I heard, the one problem they were having (notably, categories) had a simple workaround: using the unicode in place of one of the ' characters, like ' or something.
