ok - found out how to get into sysop - now hoe am i
supposed to save the
edited page? i keep on getting the following - everytime i submit;
"Someone else has changed this page since you started editing it. The upper
text area contains the page text as it currently exists. Your changes are
shown in the lower text area. You will have to merge your changes into the
existing text. Only the text in the upper text area will be saved when you
press "Save page". "
What you're seeing here is an "edit conflict" - when 2 people edit the
same page at the same time, the software does exactly what that
message says it's doing: puts the current page (somebody else's edit)
in the top box, and the changes you made in the bottom, because it
doesn't know how to merge them together. See
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Edit_conflict for more on this.
Who knows why you're getting it every time you try to save your front
page, though (I'm presuming you haven't had this problem anywhere
else?) - perhaps some kind of database inconsistency? It shouldn't be
possible to create an edit conflict with yourself (there's a special
case in the code to stop that), which rules out things like clicking
the button too many times. Does it make a difference which account you
log in as? [If you've unprotected the page, you should be able to edit
it as anybody]
