The problem with locking reads turns out to be a
bug in InnoDB. Well,
I'm calling it a bug anyway.
I know this has been covered before, but if we are talking about
"longterm software strategy", I'd like to point out that PostgreSQL
is still totally free, has no locking issues, and now offers replication.
There are even some PG hackers lurking on this list (besides me) that
would be more than happy to help move things in that direction. :)
Why do people keep pushing for PostgreSQL as if MySQL was some sort of
evil daemon? (No pun intended...)
I have never seen any substantial evidence that PostgreSQL is in any way
more suitable for the task at hand; people keep claiming it's "more
efficient" or "more robust" or whatever, but in the end, LiveJournal and
Slashdot are still using MySQL.
