I realize that I just got into a big squabble about this earlier in the
week, but... why not?
Are we worried that PEAR is going away sometime soon? Is the
package-management overhead too costly? PEAR extensions are all licensed
under OSI-approve Open Source licenses and if needed could be
distributed with MediaWiki.
When to use or not to use available libraries is a case-by-case
question. Including a super-huge library to get a tiny sliver of its
functionality is wasteful, but more often than not general-purpose
libraries end up being a good bet.
