Dear Wikipedians do try Google Trends to see which wikipedia Indians are searching for vis a vis english wikipedia , Seems Hindi and Tamil Wikipedia are doing better on this count.

Hi folks,
This is to inform that Malayalam Wikipedia (ml.wikipedia.org) crossed
14,000 articles.
     http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Statistics

It took only less than 2.5 months from 13K to 14K. This is particularly
important because Malayalam Wikipedia has strict guidelines on the quality
of the new articles being created. Good job !

Hello,

In an annual effort to welcome new Board members with an informal
chat, the newest Wikimedia Trustees (Phoebe and Bishakha) are taking
part in an open meeting on IRC this Saturday.  This is a forum to
discuss Wikimedia issues and anything else that's on your mind.

Where : #wikimedia   on   irc.freenode.net
When  :  Saturday September 11, 1600-1700 UTC
           (That's 0900 PST / 1200 EST / 1800 CEST / 2130 IST)

All are welcome - please join the meeting with ideas or questions
about Wikimedia and the Projects, or simply with good cheer!  If you
have a topic to add to the agenda, please add it on Meta:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_meetings#September_2010

We will keep the meeting to an hour, and will cover the agenda before
moving to an open discussion.  Summary minutes will be published.

I hope to see many of you there,
Sam

Hey everyone

Just wanted to inform everyone that there are some new statistics available
about global Wikipedia usage for Q3 of this year.

http://infodisiac.com/blog/2010/09/wikipedia-page-edits-a-global-perspective/

I just saw some surprising trends if you look at a language and country-wise
breakdown of page views and edits.

1.India is No. 15 globally in terms of Wikipedia page views and edits which
is expected for having only 7% internet usage, one of the lowest in the
first 50 countries on the list.

2. India is still the fifth largest viewer of the English Wikipedia.

3. 94% of Indian Wikimedians view the English Wikipedia, the second largest
language group for India after English is Hindi with 0.6% of total views.

http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportVisitsPerCountryTrends.htm

4. 70% of edits from India are on the English Wikipedia (this marks a
gradual fall in edits from 81% in Q4 2009) followed by 6.6% for Telugu (this
quarter also marks a large increase in edits in Telugu and Tamil languages,
while Hindi and Malayalam both registered a drop)

http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportEditsPerCountryTrends.htm

The most surprising information is in the language-wise breakdown of edits
per country:

http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportVisitsPerLanguageBreakdown.htm#

The first Indian language on the list by 0.03% of global share is Hindi,
followed by Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi, all at 0.02% of global Usage. the
most surprising statistics is that the largest Page views to these languages
is not from India but the US sometimes more than several times the number of
views from India. Tamil is the only language where this disparity as its
lowest.

The number of views from India is highest at 94% to the English Wikipedia
but the number of edits has been steadily dropping at a very sharp rate
(almost 10% in the last year).

Regards

Salmaan

Thank you, Salmaan. These are fascinating data points and also, provide a
road-map, of sorts, to the community.

Best,

language page view statistic, based on my analysis of localized firefox
users.<http://tech4society.blogspot.com/2010/03/firefox-indic-language-usage-is-not.html>

I feel that if a multinational company headquarted in US  has a set of IP
addresses, it can use those addresses from India as well. Or the proxy might
be US IP. In which case the Indian page views can be treated as US page
views. If the number of edits from India have gone up in the respective
language, the views also would go up, as the views for the edits are not
removed from the total views.

Cheers
Arjun
