[Wikimediaau-l] Wikimania 2010?

I would like to point out that the costs for Sydney and Melbourne on Qantas are so low right now only because they have a special promotion on. To quote from their website:

"Seats are on sale until midnight Sunday 8 June 2008 (AEST) unless sold out before. These one way specials are valid for travel only on Sunday 8 June 2008. Hurry, seats are limited".

When I punch in a request for a flight today, Brisbane comes up as $374, and Sydney as $391. Flights on Virgin appear comparable. I would imagine that come 2010, prices will still be comparable. You might also get lucky and get a discount on a flight to Brisbane!

Regards,
Craig F.

From a West Australian POV the cost of attending a Brisbane Wikimania is about the same as attending an event in SE Asia.

basic flight cost today Per to .... return plus accom
  Brisbane $710
  Syd $450
  Mel $320
  Adl $400

Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bali all have 7 day inc accom between 800-1200, even less for a 4 day trip.

The same issues apply to Perth in reverse, also a greater proportion of WM-au people are in Syd, Mel

All major cities and most regioanl centres have the facilities for a Wikimania type event not just Brisbane the only difference is that Brisbane people had already made official contact in relation 2009.

Under the circumstances I wouldnt be supportive a Brisbane bid..

Unless there's some particular opposition, or current attempt at a bid by another Australian city, I support the Brisbane bid.

If the judges don't know where it is, they can look it up on Wikipedia.

I'm not sure, but I'll send a few exploratory emails and see if there's much

As many of our big sponsors are located in SE Queensland (ie: Brisbane City
Council, University of Queensland), I suspect they will not be all that
interested in sponsoring and supporting an event outside of Brisbane or SE
Queensland (we may be able to get away with Gold Coast, which is a large
city in its own right, and within easy driving range of Brisbane itself, but
it's not all that accessible from Europe/North America, despite having its
      own International Airport).

Basically, what I was getting at, is that if we really want to have a decent
chance of success, we need to begin doing this *now*, rather than waiting
until a month before the deadline.

With regard to the "Brisbane, where's that?" comment, I imagine that the Bid
Evaluation team will be aware enough of the location of the city,
particularly from us having bid before, that this will not be a problem.
Brisbane has pretty much all of the advantages of Sydney and Melbourne
(accessible, cosmopolitan), along with its own distinct advantages (good
climate, proximity to tourist attractions, low costs). Also, in all my
years interacting with foreigners both on and offline, nobody has had any
trouble with recognising Brisbane as a city in Australia. I don't think
that geographic obscurity is going to be that much of a problem, and it may
even be an advantage, with Brisbane being seen as a more "exotic" location
than Sydney or the usual "world city" suspects.

      Craig F.
