Bleh, I suspected this was the case.

Wouldn't it be unnecessary? After all, they'll all be in
[[Category:YEAR deaths]], all of which will be subcategories of the
main one...

(Actually, I suppose that's option d), see who's had the current
year-of-death cat added. Hrm.)
